Position Overview:
The Project Engineer III is an experienced structural engineer with demonstrated proficiency in structural analysis, design, and project documentation. Working under the direction of Project Executives and Project Managers, the Project Engineer III performs advanced and complex structural engineering assignments and provides significant technical support throughout the design and construction phases of projects.
At this level, engineers are expected to demonstrate strong technical judgment, proficiency with Apex's preferred analysis and design software, and a comprehensive understanding of structural systems, construction documents, and project coordination. Project Engineer III team members also contribute to the technical development of less-experienced engineers and participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups to advance the firm's engineering standards, tools, and technical knowledge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently perform advanced structural analysis and design for complex structural components and building systems using applicable building codes, design standards, and engineering principles.
- Develop, review, and evaluate complex structural analysis models, including three-dimensional gravity and lateral building models, with appropriate modeling assumptions, loading conditions, boundary conditions, and design parameters.
- Evaluate structural analysis results using sound engineering judgment and identify unusual behavior, load distribution, forces, reactions, deflections, stability concerns, or modeling conditions requiring further investigation.
- Develop and evaluate structural design solutions for complex conditions, considering structural performance, constructability, efficiency, coordination, and project requirements.
- Interpret and apply ASCE 7, IBC, AISC, ACI, TMS, SJI, and other applicable codes and standards, including provisions requiring engineering judgment or interpretation.
- Develop, review, and finalize structural calculations and engineering documentation for completeness, consistency, appropriate assumptions, design criteria, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Independently interpret architectural, structural, and other project construction documents and use project information to develop coordinated structural designs.
- Review architectural and MEP/FP drawings and models to identify structural impacts, equipment loads, penetrations, clearances, support requirements, coordination requirements, and potential conflicts.
- Coordinate structural design requirements with architects, consultants, and other engineering disciplines and contribute to the resolution of multidisciplinary coordination issues.
- Develop engineering information for structural drawings and models and coordinate with BIM/modeling team members to resolve complex structural detailing, modeling, and documentation requirements.
- Perform detailed reviews of structural drawings and models for consistency with calculations, structural design intent, project requirements, and Apex standards.
- Review shop drawings, submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and other construction-phase documentation and independently evaluate routine technical issues while assisting with more complex issues.
- Participate in external project meetings and technical coordination discussions with architects, consultants, contractors, and clients as directed by the Project Manager or Project Executive.
- Clearly communicate technical concepts, structural requirements, engineering concerns, design decisions, and proposed solutions to both technical and non-technical project participants.
- Identify technical issues, incomplete information, coordination concerns, constructability issues, and other conditions that may affect structural design and communicate them to the Project Manager or Project Executive with appropriate recommendations.
- Provide technical support to Project Managers and Project Executives in evaluating design alternatives, constructability, technical risks, and complex engineering issues.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Project Engineer I and Project Engineer II team members in structural calculations, analysis modeling, design methods, software, codes, and Apex engineering standards.
- Review engineering work prepared by less-experienced engineers when assigned and provide clear, constructive technical feedback to improve quality, accuracy, and engineering judgment.
- Contribute to internal technical discussions and knowledge sharing by identifying lessons learned, recurring technical issues, and opportunities to improve engineering practices.
- Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups and contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, design tools, calculation procedures, software practices, technical resources, and lessons learned.
- Apply Apex’s engineering standards, QA/QC procedures, documentation requirements, and project delivery processes consistently throughout assigned engineering work.
- Continue developing advanced expertise in structural systems, building codes, analysis methods, constructability, fabrication, erection, and emerging engineering technologies.
- Demonstrate ownership of assigned technical work by managing priorities, meeting established deadlines, communicating technical concerns early, and delivering accurate and complete engineering work.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university.
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related engineering discipline preferred.
- Typically four or more years of relevant structural engineering experience with progressively increasing technical responsibility.
- Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure required, as applicable to the position and jurisdiction.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the analysis and design of structural building systems using steel, concrete, masonry, and other applicable structural materials.
- Strong understanding of structural load development, load paths, gravity and lateral systems, and the interaction of structural components within an overall building system.
- Proficiency with ASCE 7 and applicable building codes and material design standards, with the ability to research, interpret, and apply provisions to complex structural conditions.
- Proficiency with Apex’s preferred structural analysis and design software and demonstrated ability to develop, review, and evaluate three-dimensional structural analysis models.
- Strong understanding of structural analysis behavior and the ability to independently evaluate the reasonableness of analysis results, identify unusual structural behavior, and determine appropriate next steps.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural and structural construction documents and developing coordinated structural designs based on project requirements.
- Working knowledge of MEP/FP and other discipline drawings and the ability to identify how those systems affect and interface with structural design.
- Ability to develop clear, organized, and comprehensive structural calculations and engineering documentation with appropriate engineering judgment.
- Ability to independently evaluate structural design alternatives and identify practical solutions based on technical, constructability, coordination, and project requirements.
- Ability to communicate and coordinate technical structural requirements effectively with architects, consultants, contractors, and other project participants.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated engineering judgment, attention to detail, and ability to work through complex technical issues.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, mentorship, and constructive feedback to less-experienced engineers.
- Ability to review engineering work for technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency with project requirements and Apex standards.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of assigned technical responsibilities while recognizing when issues require direction from a Project Manager, Project Executive, or senior technical resource.
- Commitment to continued technical development and contributing to Apex’s engineering standards, technical resources, and knowledge-sharing efforts.
