About the Role
We are seeking talented Semiconductor Laser Design Engineers (Senior levels) to join our growing team, focusing on the design, simulation, and optimisation of InP-based semiconductor laser chips.
The successful candidates will contribute to the development of high-performance III-V semiconductor optoelectronic devices, including Electro-Absorption Modulated Lasers (EMLs), Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers, and Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs).
This role offers an opportunity to work on advanced semiconductor laser technologies, collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to support product development from initial design through to testing and production.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design, simulation, optimisation, and performance validation of InP-based semiconductor laser chips.
Perform optical, electrical, thermal, and carrier transport simulations to optimise chip structures and device performance.
Collaborate with process engineers on chip fabrication, tape-out, and testing activities.
Analyse testing data to refine chip designs and improve device performance.
Support device characterisation, performance testing, and failure analysis to enhance product yield and reliability.
Identify and resolve technical challenges throughout the design and development process.
Work closely with fabrication, testing, and production teams to ensure designs meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements.
Essential Requirements
Education & Experience
PhD in Electronic Engineering, Microelectronics, Optoelectronics, Semiconductor Physics, Optical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Minimum 2 years of experience in III-V semiconductor optoelectronic device design, particularly EML, DFB, or SOA devices.
Technical Skills
Strong understanding of semiconductor physics, optoelectronics, and semiconductor laser principles.
Familiarity with semiconductor laser fabrication processes, including epitaxial growth, chip fabrication, and device testing.
Proficiency in at least one optical or semiconductor device simulation tool, with the ability to independently perform chip structure simulations and parameter optimisation.
Understanding of key semiconductor laser performance parameters, characterisation methods, and testing techniques.
Ability to analyse experimental results and optimise device designs based on testing data.
Strong data analysis and programming skills.
Knowledge of semiconductor laser reliability testing and analysis.
Professional Skills
Ability to independently manage technical projects and solve complex engineering challenges.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes and develop effective design solutions.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills, particularly when collaborating across design, fabrication, testing, and production teams.
Good command of English, including the ability to read technical literature and participate in international technical discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven experience leading the development of high-speed EML products, particularly those successfully transferred into mass production.
Experience with high-frequency electromagnetic simulation tools.
Demonstrated ability to optimise semiconductor laser designs for performance, reliability, and production yield.
What We Offer
Competitive Salary: £55,000–£100,000 per annum, depending on experience and technical expertise.
Flexible Working: Remote and flexible working arrangements within the UK.
Visa Sponsorship: Sponsorship opportunities available for eligible international candidates.
Company Share Scheme: Opportunity to participate in the company's long-term growth.
Career Development: Opportunities for senior engineers to grow within a technically challenging environment.
International Collaboration: Work with engineering and technology partners across the UK, Europe, and Asia.
How to Apply
If you have a strong background in III-V semiconductor laser design and are passionate about developing advanced optoelectronic technologies, we would love to hear from you.
Please submit your updated CV, highlighting your relevant experience in InP-based semiconductor lasers, EML/DFB/SOA device design, simulation, and chip development.
We welcome applications from senior engineers who meet the technical requirements.
