At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.
A little more about your role…
At WSP, we're proud to have retained our long-standing Professional Services Contract with Shropshire Council, a partnership that has developed over more than 23 years. As part of the Shropshire Alliance, working collaboratively alongside Shropshire Council and Kier, we deliver a diverse programme of infrastructure projects that make a lasting difference to local communities.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join our bridges and structures team. You'll help deliver work ranging from bridge maintenance and structural assessments to major infrastructure improvements and strategic asset management.
The role is based from our Shrewsbury office, with flexible working offering a blend of office and home working. We would also welcome applications from candidates based in Birmingham, with regular travel to Shropshire.
What you'll be doing
You'll take a leading role in bridge and highway structure projects, including:
- Leading bridge maintenance and renewal designs, from investigation and feasibility through to detailed design.
- Supporting tender activity, site inspections, construction supervision and structural assessment.
- Undertaking inspections in accordance with DMRB and the Inspection Manual for Highway Structures.
- Providing technical input to project briefs, proposals and deliverables with Project Managers.
- Checking, certifying and authorising designs, documents, reports and Approval in Principle (AIP) submissions.
- Managing the delivery of technical outputs across project teams.
- Demonstrating compliance with health, safety, welfare and CDM responsibilities.
- Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues, the client team and delivery partners.
- Contributing to technical excellence, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Supporting line management and mentoring, where appropriate.
Your team
You'll be an integral part of a highly collaborative Shropshire team of approximately 75 people. We work across multi-asset teams, providing individual and cross-asset expertise to deliver projects, major programmes and strategic planning for our client.
Our renewed contract creates exciting opportunities across infrastructure, economic growth, buildings management and project management. It also offers excellent prospects for career development within the wider WSP business. We're looking for people who share our ambition to deliver high-quality outcomes for the communities of Shropshire.
Our Shrewsbury office is located in a historic market town offering independent shops, restaurants and riverside walks along the River Severn, together with the flexibility to combine home and office working.
What we're looking for
- A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Membership of a relevant professional body, with CEng or IEng status, or evidence of advanced progress towards a future submission.
- Experience as a Structural Engineer, with a focus on bridges and other highway structures.
- Evidence of independently leading or delivering complex engineering projects.
- Strong technical, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- A collaborative approach and a commitment to innovation and technical quality.
We are open to applications from candidates who already hold a UK Skilled Worker visa and need to transfer their sponsorship to a new employer. Any sponsorship will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will remain subject to the role, salary and individual meeting the relevant eligibility and immigration requirements.
