As members of Translation and Editorial Services in the Communications Department, Senior Editors help the Bank of Canada achieve its policy and public communication objectives by ensuring that high-profile publications are clear, coherent, accessible and effective for their intended audiences.
The work of language professionals is evolving rapidly, especially in light of new technologies. The successful candidate will need to combine language expertise with solid skills in project management, relationship management, digital literacy and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate is innovative and has a continuous-improvement mindset.
What you will do
Reporting to the Director, Translation and Editorial Services, you will:
Editing
- edit a wide range of English texts for clarity, accuracy, consistency and impact, adapting the level and type of edit to the product, audience and communication risk
- provide substantive, structural, stylistic and copy editing, including significant rewriting when needed to strengthen logic, flow, voice, tone and accessibility, particularly for complex economic content
- work with authors to clarify objectives, refine key messages and narrative, anticipate how audiences will interpret the content, reduce the risk of misinterpretation and apply Bank style standards and editorial practices consistently
- contribute to developing, maintaining and applying Bank style standards, writing guidance and editorial practices to ensure they meet the organization’s evolving needs
Project management
- plan, coordinate and deliver complex, high-profile editorial projects by defining milestones, responsibilities and deadlines, monitoring progress and identifying issues early
- develop effective work strategies, adjust priorities as operational needs, deadlines or scope change, and keep projects moving by considering the timelines, constraints and communication needs of the teams involved
Relationship management and influence
- build trusted working relationships with internal clients, including with senior management, by understanding their objectives, audiences, constraints and expectations
- promote effective collaboration among stakeholders in complex projects by clarifying expectations, facilitating communication, helping to resolve differing points of view and communicating thoughtfully under tight timelines and high expectations
Digital literacy and artificial intelligence
- use technology, including artificial intelligence tools, critically, safely and responsibly by evaluating outputs, confidentiality risks and the value it adds to editorial work
- help integrate technological tools into the team’s work by participating in trials, making recommendations and sharing best practices
Continuous improvement and innovation
- recommend practical improvements to processes, tools, editorial practices and ways of working to increase efficiency, consistency and quality
- stay informed about trends in editing, plain language, communications and related technologies, and help turn new ideas into team practices, guidelines and internal standards
What you need to succeed
You have a strong understanding of economics and a genuine interest in the subject, enabling you to work confidently with complex economic content and engage meaningfully with authors and subject matter experts.
You bring demonstrated expertise in substantive, structural, stylistic and copy editing, proofreading and project management. You can apply plain-language principles, edit for the web and advise on structure, narrative, tone and audience needs. You are an adaptable, collaborative language advisor who can explain editorial recommendations clearly, build consensus, identify communication risks and opportunities for improvement, and deliver high-quality advice and content within prescribed time frames.

- education or training in translation and experience translating from French to English
Your education and experience
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or a related field and 7 to 10 years of experience editing complex, high-profile communications and research publications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Language requirement
The Bank’s work environment is conducive to the use of both of Canada’s official languages - English and French. The position language requirement is Level 5 (Fully Functional). If a qualified candidate who meets the language requirement of the position is not found, a qualified candidate who does not meet the language requirement may be considered. Training may be provided to help reach the required level. Both bilingual and unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Hybrid Work Model
The Bank offers work arrangements that provide employees with flexibility, enable high-performing teams, and support an excellent workplace culture. Most employees can telework from home for a portion of each month as part of the Bank’s hybrid work model, and they are expected on site at the Bank location a minimum of 12 days per month to help build connections between colleagues. You must live in Canada, and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.

- Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $111,051 to $130,649 (job grade 17)
- The Bank offers an incentive for successfully meeting expectations at 7 to 10% of your base salary. The Bank offers additional performance pay (5%) for those who exceed expectations. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
