Who we are:

At Rover, pets and their people are at the heart of everything we do. We connect pet parents with trusted pet care across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.

Headquartered in Seattle and Barcelona, we’re a values driven, fast-growing tech company focused on building safe and personalized experiences tailored to the needs of each unique pet. We’re investing in AI as a business accelerator and provide every team member access to AI tools in service of creating better experiences for our community.

We are proud to be recognized as a great place to work, having been named among the 100 Best Companies to Work For in Seattle Business Magazine and Washington’s Best Workplaces in the Puget Sound Business Journal. At Rover we’re committed to creating an accessible, inclusive, and welcoming community, which starts with our employees.

Want to make an impact? Join our pack and come work (and play!) with us.

We are the Client Platform team. We help other developers at Rover build high quality experiences quickly by focusing on underlying tools and frameworks.

We manage and build out core tooling and platforms for frontend development across the web and mobile apps at Rover. We on rare occasion will work in our Django backend, but it’s not a focus for our team. We are looking for this role to be primarily focused on web and React Native frontend.

Some of our key investments :

  1. Continuing to expand our cross-platform Design System. We maintain the shared library of re-usable components that make it easy to build cross-platform apps quickly.

  2. Moving the website to be served from Next.js. We are migrating the fundamental tech used to serve Rover.com to a community supported SSR platform.

  3. Making it easier to build with AI. Building workflows, skills, techniques, and approaches for AI-based development and migrations across all teams.

  4. Moving Rover to a React Native-first app + development cycle. We are completing our React Native migration (now serving 90+% mobile views) and fully migrating to a React Native development cycle.

  5. Managing Rover’s adoption of modern tech - notably Next.js, React Query, Expo, and others.

As a Platform team, we build out the fundamental tech that powers the internals of Rover.com and the mobile apps. We empower developers to be able to focus more on building great experiences than fighting their tech.

Technologies

Rover.com is primarily built in React, served either from a SSR or Django backend, and compiled with Webpack. Our client API is written in Python in Django, which serves over 2 billion requests a month. Our mobile apps are a majority React Native.

Our development environment centers around ready-to-use Codespaces. At Rover, we deploy to the web 40-60 times a day, with a median review -> merge time for PRs of 3 hours. So all that to say - we prioritize shipping small, incremental work often and quickly!

The role

We are looking for someone with a primarily web development background who is excited to work both on Web React and React Native. As a senior engineer on our team, you will:

  • Solve complex technical problems at the fundamentals of our web and React Native clients.

  • Work to set technical standards across Rover; then evangelize and educate on those standards.

  • Build cross-platform code that works across both web and React Native.

  • Help to set a technical roadmap and vision for the team. We don’t have a partner Product Manager, and so “set our own destiny” in a sense.

  • Work with other engineers in Barcelona to help mentor them and answer questions on Client Platform topics.

  • Represent Client Platform in broad forums and collect feedback that helps inform the team’s roadmap and vision.

  • Help mentor and coach more junior engineers.

  • We are expanding our team’s presence in Barcelona. We are looking for this role to be a mix of contributing and driving the frontend platform while also supporting and upleveling other Barcelona teams.

This is a hybrid position that has the minimum expectation to work out of our Barcelona Office in the Poblenou neighborhood two days per week on Mondays and Thursdays. For this reason, candidates must be based in Barcelona or willing to relocate.

    AI/LLM based development

Rover engineers, including this team, are heavy users of Claude for daily engineering practices. We have seen the benefits over the last year, and are convinced that we can build software that is better, more ambitious, and more quickly by smartly using these tools. It is an expectation that you adopt those practices in role, and ideally bring experience and perspectives of your own.

    AI Native

Client Platform aims to generally be “AI Native” with work. We are reworking our workflows to adopt AI practices to be central. This means things such as: using workflows to handle large migrations, iterating on Claude skills, developing codebase context. It also impacts how we accomplish our work, from reorganizing how we go about our days to restructuring PR descriptions.

    Principles

Alongside our move to AI Native workflows, we recognize that LLMs can’t do everything. These are actively being developed, but a few principles / working agreements on our team around AI use are:

  • You are still responsible for your code. AI should be used to expand understanding, not substitute for it. “Claude did it” is not an excuse.

  • Text intended for humans should be written by humans. Slack messages, PR descriptions, design docs, etc should all still be written by you. We don’t want to read your undigested Claude output – copy-pasting AI output is just shifting the burden of comprehension to another.

  • PR authors are responsible for making their PRs easily reviewable. The more complex/large a PR, the more the author needs to do for others.

  • Your qualifications

We are looking for a senior level engineer, with a rich background of solving complex web and react native issues. You may not have all of these, but some of the things you will bring are:

  • 7+ years as a professional software developer

  • Expertise with Javascript frameworks (especially React) and component-driven design.

  • Experience in React Native development.

  • Expertise in multiple parts of our tech stack (see above).

  • Experience building re-usable frontend libraries.

  • Experience handling large-scale technology upgrades across a broad range of a codebase.

  • An excitement for defining technical standards that make sense for the organization.

  • Experience coaching more junior developers.

  • Rigor in automated testing, code quality, and engineering standard methodologies.

  • A focus on observability, a propensity to ship code with effective monitoring and logging.

  • Intuition for when to call it "good enough", and when to put in the extra time to polish.

  • You’re aligned with Rover Core Values.

  • Benefits of working at Rover

  • Long-term incentive plan with a company performance-based cash payout
  • Pension plan
  • Private medical insurance
  • 25 days PTO
  • Meal allowance and flexible compensation plan (transport and nursery)
  • Gym membership
  • €450 to cover the costs associated with the adoption of a pet
  • Annual €150 wellness reimbursement
  • Flexible work hours, sometimes you'll need to be in at certain times, but on the whole, we're pretty flexible when it comes to managing workload and time
  • Grab snacks, fresh fruit, in our kitchen to keep yourself going
  • Regular team activities, events, game nights, and more
  • Dog-friendly office
  • Compensation

  • In the greater Barcelona area the first-year salary range is €62,722 - €76,027. Additionally, Rover offers a long-term incentive plan with a company performance-based cash payout and benefits to full-time employees.
  • The cash compensation offered for this role will be dependent on the candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, and abilities as demonstrated in the interview and hiring process.
  • Rover is an equal-opportunity employer committed to promoting a diverse, inclusive, and inventive environment with the best employees. We’re driven by seeing our people succeed and grow, and we work to ensure everyone contributes to their fullest potential. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, disability, protected veteran status, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or any other protected status in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances.
