Remote Sensing Unit, Environmental Data Branch
Palmerston, Darwin, Northern Territory
Ongoing vacancy available
Apply your expertise in remote sensing, spatial analysis and environmental science to coordinate innovative ecosystem monitoring programs that support evidence-based environmental management across the Northern Territory.
The Department of Lands, Planning and Environment's Remote Sensing Unit delivers cutting-edge environmental monitoring, spatial analysis and reporting programs that inform natural resource management, policy development and scientific decision-making. The unit manages a range of significant monitoring initiatives and provides specialist remote sensing capabilities to support environmental assessment and reporting across the Territory.
As a Senior Remote Sensing Coordinator, your primary objective is to coordinate and further develop the Darwin Harbour Mangrove Monitoring Program, while providing technical leadership across the Unit's remote sensing, spatial analysis, UAV imagery and field-based monitoring activities. You will contribute to the strategic, scientific and technical direction of the Unit and help deliver high-quality environmental monitoring and reporting outcomes.
Your key duties will include leading the application of contemporary remote sensing, spatial analysis, modelling and machine learning approaches to assess and monitor ecosystem change, vegetation condition, landscape processes and land clearing activities. You will coordinate field monitoring and UAV survey programs, establish scientifically rigorous monitoring standards and methodologies, oversee remote sensing processing workflows and contribute to the delivery of scientific reports, publications and project outcomes.
This role will make strong use of your industry experience and tertiary qualifications in remote sensing, environmental science, spatial science, natural resource management or a related discipline. Success in the role will be supported by your demonstrated ability to analyse and integrate remotely sensed and field-collected data, communicate complex scientific information, and work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
In return, you will be rewarded with the opportunity to work on some of the Northern Territory's most significant environmental monitoring programs, alongside a highly skilled team of scientists and technical specialists. You will contribute directly to the management and protection of unique ecosystems, including internationally significant mangrove environments, while utilising advanced technologies and analytical approaches.
If you reside outside of the NT, this is a great time to consider relocating. Reward yourself with an enviable lifestyle and work-life balance that allows you time to explore the Territory's stunning landscapes and natural attractions, enjoy colourful tropical sunsets and spectacular wet season skies, and experience the rich cultural heritage of the Top End. Darwin and Palmerston's vibrant multicultural communities offer an outstanding place to live, work and play. Relocation assistance may be available to successful applicants.
