For more than 50 years, McElhanney's Terrace office has been a trusted partner throughout Northwest BC. Today, our team collaborates with professionals across Terrace, Kitimat, Smithers, Prince Rupert, Prince George, and Western Canada, combining local knowledge with national expertise to solve complex engineering challenges.

McElhanney’s structural practice works on a broad range of industrial, commercial, transportation, infrastructure, marine, resource-sector and community projects, from conceptual planning through construction and commissioning.

The successful candidate will be based in Terrace, BC, with relocation assistance available for candidates interested in making Northwest BC home.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will take a lead role in delivering structural projects from concept through design and construction.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Structural Design: Lead and deliver structural engineering projects across industrial, infrastructure, municipal, commercial and residential sectors.

• Technical Leadership: Prepare and review structural analysis, calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports.

• Field & Construction Support: Complete field verifications, structural condition assessments, inspections and provide engineering support during construction.

• Project Delivery: Help manage project scope, schedules, budgets and quality while working closely with clients and project teams.

• Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work with civil, geotechnical, survey, materials testing and environmental teams to deliver integrated solutions.

• Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers and technical staff.

• Client & Business Development: Develop strong client relationships and contribute to proposals, pursuits and opportunities to grow our structural practice in Northern BC.

• Innovation: Apply practical, constructible and innovative engineering solutions to challenging project environments.

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll have the opportunity to work on complex northern projects, including specialized structures requiring innovative design, challenging-site solutions and hands-on construction support.

What You’ll Bring

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.

• P.Eng. registration in BC, or eligibility for registration.

• Minimum of 12+ years of structural engineering experience, with responsibility for project delivery, technical design, review and leadership.

• Strong knowledge of Canadian structural codes, standards and engineering practices.

• Strong experience in structural steel, concrete, foundations, connection design and structural analysis.

• Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports.

• Experience providing construction technical support, field engineering, inspections and constructability reviews is an asset.

• Experience with industrial, mining, energy, infrastructure or other resource-sector projects, including complex or remote-site environments, is an asset.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary teams.

• Experience with project management, client relationships, business development and mentoring is an asset.

• Proficiency with structural design and analysis software such as STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, S-Frame, ETABS, RISA or equivalent, as well as AutoCAD and Bluebeam.

• Valid Class 5 driver's licence.

What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $115,000 - $173,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
