Infrastructure Engineer – Distributed Compute

Location: New York - on-site - full time

Salary range: up to seven figures USD, total comp

We're working with a globally renowned hedge fund that has built one of the most technically advanced engineering organisations in the financial industry. With continued investment in its core technology platforms, the firm is expanding its New York engineering team and looking for talented Infrastructure Engineers with a strong background in distributed compute and large-scale systems engineering.

This role will focus on building and evolving the distributed compute platforms that power the firm's computationally intensive research and trading activities. You'll be tackling complex infrastructure challenges at significant scale, designing systems capable of efficiently orchestrating demanding workloads while pushing the boundaries of performance, resilience and resource utilisation. There is considerable scope to shape technical direction, take ownership of new infrastructure initiatives and build critical systems from the ground up.

They're particularly keen to speak with engineers who have operated in high-growth technology companies, where building scalable infrastructure, solving difficult technical problems and taking end-to-end ownership are part of everyday engineering. The environment offers the technical depth and resources of a world-class financial institution, combined with the opportunity to make meaningful architectural decisions and have a direct impact on the platforms supporting the wider business.

What we're looking for:

• Strong experience building modern compute infrastructure and technologies, including container orchestration, cloud-native infrastructure and distributed workload scheduling.
• 4+ years of commercial software or infrastructure engineering experience, with significant hands-on experience designing, building and scaling distributed compute systems in production.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including concurrency, resource management, fault tolerance, scalability and systems performance.
• Experience with technologies such as Kubernetes, Ray, Slurm, Apache Spark or other modern distributed compute and scheduling frameworks.
• A strong track record of ownership, whether through 0-1 platform development, leading infrastructure architecture decisions or delivering complex engineering initiatives independently.
• Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or another highly technical discipline, supported by a strong academic record (GPA 3.7+).

Experience that could be particularly relevant:

• Infrastructure engineering experience within high-growth, technically ambitious technology startups or scale-ups, particularly those operating large-scale compute platforms.
• Experience as a Founding Engineer, early infrastructure hire or technical lead, with meaningful responsibility for building core infrastructure from the ground up.
• Hands-on experience building distributed compute platforms, cluster management systems or large-scale workload orchestration infrastructure.
• Experience optimising compute utilisation, workload scheduling, infrastructure performance or the reliability of large-scale production systems.
