Company Description
Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect millions of entrepreneurs with millions of buyers around the world. As an Etsy employee, you will tackle unique, meaningful, and large-scale problems alongside passionate coworkers, all the while making a rewarding impact and Keeping Commerce Human.

We believe exceptional companies are built by exceptional teams, and we're intentional about it. That means hiring great people, setting them up for success from day one, and giving them real reasons to grow their careers here. We invest in development that goes beyond promotions, and we foster the trust and relationships that help people do their best work together.

What’s the role?

As a Staff Product Researcher, you will lead research across complex, ambiguous, and often cross-functional problem spaces, influencing company strategy through a deep understanding of Etsy’s buyers and sellers, our marketplace experience, and the evolving commerce landscape.

You’ll be a hands-on researcher and strategic thought partner - someone who can define a research agenda, execute high-impact research, connect insights across teams and data sources, and translate deep human understanding into meaningful product direction. You’ll partner closely with product, design, analytics, and engineering to inform both near-term product decisions and longer-term investments.

This is a high-impact individual contributor role with influence across your group and the broader research team. You will help set research direction, mentor others, and champion a high bar for research quality and impact.

This is a full time role reporting to the Director of Research

What’s this team like at Etsy?

  • We’re a mixed-methods team, applying a deep bench of quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Our research guides the development of buyer and seller experiences across Etsy’s dynamic marketplace of unique items.
  • Our insights play a key role in building confidence around product decisions and shaping our overall business strategy.
  • We actively foster an inclusive team culture that promotes diversity, collaboration, and professional development.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Set the research agenda: Define and lead a portfolio of research across complex problem spaces, prioritizing the questions that matter most to customers and the business.
  • Shape product and business direction: Translate insights into clear points of view and recommendations that influence strategy, roadmaps, and product decisions.
  • Lead research end-to-end: Design and execute foundational and evaluative research, applying the right methods while balancing rigor, speed, and business needs.
  • Connect the dots: Draw from primary research, behavioral data, market trends, and existing knowledge to build a holistic understanding of customers and opportunities.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment: Partner with Product, Design, Engineering, Analytics, and other teams to ensure customer understanding is central to decision-making.
  • Connect findings across research: Work across teams and problem spaces to identify patterns, synthesize insights, and build a more coherent picture of the customer experience.
  • Mentor and elevate craft: Support other researchers and contribute to a culture of high-quality, forward-thinking research.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • Deep expertise across research methods, with a track record of leading complex, ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Strong research judgment, knowing when to prioritize rigor, when to move quickly, and how to design research around the decision at hand.
  • Ability to develop a research agenda, not just a study plan — identifying and sequencing the highest-impact questions for a problem space.
  • Strong business judgment, connecting customer needs and behaviors with product strategy, market context, and business priorities.
  • Skilled communicator who can influence senior stakeholders, synthesize complexity, and communicate research as decisions and recommendations, not just findings.
  • Comfortable operating at multiple altitudes — from hands-on execution to shaping broader direction, mentoring others, and elevating research practice across the organization.

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to salary, you'll be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family. Base salary is determined by your location, skills, and experience.
