The City of Medicine Hat is seeking a Superintendent, Electric Distribution Operations to lead the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of our electric distribution system. Reporting to the Manager, Electric Operations, you will lead a team of skilled Power Line Technicians and utility professionals responsible for maintaining critical electrical infrastructure and delivering dependable service to our community. This leadership role combines operational excellence, safety leadership, workforce development, and strategic planning.

What you'll do

• Lead and develop Electric Distribution Operations employees through coaching, training, performance management, and succession planning.
• Foster a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with applicable legislation, codes, standards, and City policies.
• Coordinate maintenance programs and operational priorities to support system reliability.
• Participate in business planning, budgeting, and resource allocation activities.
• Build effective relationships with internal departments, contractors, regulators, and industry partners.
• Support labour relations activities and maintain a positive, productive work environment.
• Monitor industry developments and identify opportunities to improve operational practices and procedures.
• Participate in standby rotation and provide leadership during outage response and emergency situations.
  
  

What you bring

You are an experienced electrical utility professional with a strong background in electric distribution operations and leadership.

You bring:

• Thorough knowledge of electric distribution system operations, maintenance practices, equipment, and utility work processes.
• Strong understanding of utility safety programs, operational risk management, and regulatory compliance.
• Experience leading skilled trades or utility operations teams in a safety-sensitive environment.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence, coach, and mentor employees.
• Experience managing operational priorities, maintenance programs, budgets, and workforce planning.
• Sound decision-making skills and the ability to perform effectively during outages and emergency situations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, ERP systems, and other utility-related technologies.
  
  

Qualifications

• A current and valid Journeyman Power Line Technician certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• At least eight years of directly related operating experience in an urban distribution electrical system.
• At least four years of experience supervising others, included within the eight years of directly related experience.
• A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
• The ability to participate in standby duties as operationally required.
• An equivalent combination of management-approved education and experience may be considered.
• This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen, which includes testing for cannabis use.
