POSITION SUMMARY To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by performing a variety of technical activities related to patient care, as well as support activities in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Performs a variety of duties in an operating room observing proper techniques to include preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment; open sterile supplies and arrange sterile setups for operations. Creates, maintains, and terminates sterile field for surgical procedures. Properly handles and cares for all instruments and equipment. Checks materials and equipment for proper functioning and adequacy; reports faulty equipment and instruments per policy. Assists with precepting new technical personnel. Attends in-services and mandatory meetings. Cooperates with the nurse in the individualized plan of care for each patient. Anticipates needs of surgeon and surgical assistants in the operating room, passing instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies needed in an operative procedure. Demonstrates an ability to perform all duties required of a Surgical Technologist in accordance with established procedures and completion of skills check list. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL II Education : Graduate of a program for Surgical Technologist (Military, Community College, or School for Surgical Technology, or Health First On-The-Job Training)) Licensure : None Certification : Must obtain AHA BLS within three months of hire. Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is required for Level II. Work Experience : One year of experience as a Surgical Technician is preferred. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities : Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English Ability to perform basic math Detail-oriented Team player Reliable transportation with ability to respond from location within 30 minutes of assigned facility when on call Ability to be flexible and adaptable with daily schedule and assigned tasks Ability to work under stressful situations. Continuous concentration on an activity. Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to interact effectively with medical staff and patient care team. Ability to receive constructive criticism and apply to future performance. Ability to work autonomously, while consulting chain of command as appropriate. Motivated to complete milestones and competencies. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Exposure to bio-hazardous waste, substances, and unknown diseases. Vision and hearing in normal range. Sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Frequent lifting, pulling, reaching, and carrying of light to heavy patients and/or objects. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds unassisted.
