Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Professional to support the development, fabrication, and testing of electrochemical energy-storage and conversion technologies. This position resides in the Energy Storage and Conversion Group in the Chemical Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prepare, assemble, and evaluate electrochemical cells, test fixtures, and related components for battery and redox-flow-battery research, following approved procedures and project requirements.
- Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory equipment and electrochemical test systems; support routine upkeep and ensure components, materials, and supplies are ready for scheduled work.
- Prepare samples and conduct electrochemical tests; organize, analyze, and quality-check results while maintaining complete experimental records and data files.
- Work with researchers, engineers, and project partners to execute work plans, communicate progress, and contribute technical content to reports, presentations, and publications.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, electrochemistry, or related discipline
- A minimum of 2 years of hands-on laboratory experience in electrochemical testing, battery development, materials processing, or a related technical area.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, electrochemistry, or related discipline
- A minimum of 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience in electrochemical testing, battery development, materials processing, or a related technical area.
- Demonstrated ability to follow written procedures, maintain accurate laboratory records, and work safely with laboratory equipment and materials
- Experience with battery or redox-flow-battery cell assembly, cycling, performance evaluation, or troubleshooting.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Trackable publication records
- Existing national lab work experiences
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
Special Requirements:
- This position requires regular onsite work in a laboratory environment in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and compliance with applicable ORNL safety procedures.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
- To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
- If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
