University English Instructor – Japan

Westgate is accepting applications from candidates both inside and outside Japan for university English teaching positions beginning in Spring 2027.

We are seeking motivated educators to teach practical, communication-focused English in accredited and extracurricular university programs. Prior EFL/ESL teaching experience is not required.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's degree or higher

Preferred, but not required:

• EFL/ESL teaching certifications and/or classroom teaching experience are welcome.
• Experience teaching other subjects may also be considered.

No Japanese language ability is required.

We also encourage applications from candidates holding a master's degree or higher and at least three years (six terms/semesters) of university or community college teaching experience.

Compensation

• Starting at ¥280,000/month for applicants holding CELTA, DELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, Trinity DipTESOL, or a master's degree or higher.
• Starting at ¥270,000/month for applicants who do not hold one of the above qualifications.

Contract Period and Location

Spring 2027: Late March/early April to late July (3–5 months).

Positions are available in the Kanto region (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba Prefectures) and Aichi Prefecture (Nagoya area). Westgate also offers Fall term contracts, typically running for 3–5 months from early/mid-September to late December or January.

Working Schedule

Full Monday–Friday availability is required. Working hours vary by assignment and may differ from day to day. Teaching schedules may include five to seven 40–45-minute lessons or two to three 90–100-minute lessons per day.

Housing and Support

• Westgate-arranged housing: ¥81,000/month for a private room in a social residence or ¥98,000/month for a studio-type apartment.
• Working visa sponsorship is available.
• Renewable contracts may be available.
• Eligible instructors arriving from overseas may receive airfare reimbursement of up to US$1,200 total (up to US$600 inbound and US$600 outbound), subject to advance approval and applicable conditions. Outbound reimbursement requires a reimbursable inbound flight.

Computer Requirements

Instructors must have their own computers that meet Westgate's technical requirements. Please review the full specifications, including supported operating systems, before applying. Chromebooks are not accepted.
