POSITION SUMMARY:

Oceanview Life and Annuity Company is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our growing Accounting team. This position will be responsible for supporting the accounting and financial reporting activities of Oceanview Life and Annuity Company and several affiliated entities.

The Staff Accountant will support a broad range of accounting activities, including cash transactions, account reconciliations, journal entries, premium tax reporting, insurance accounting, monthly close, statutory reporting, and audit support. This role will work closely with members of the Accounting and Finance teams and provide exposure to both general ledger and insurance-specific accounting activities.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career accounting professional who is looking to build a strong foundation in the insurance and financial services industry while gaining hands-on experience across multiple areas of corporate and statutory accounting.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU'LL DO

General Accounting & Monthly Close

  • Prepare and record journal entries and other general ledger activity for Oceanview and affiliated entities.
  • Prepare daily and monthly account reconciliations and research and resolve identified discrepancies.
  • Support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes by preparing journal entries, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with the review and analysis of balance sheet and income statement accounts to identify unusual activity, variances, or items requiring further investigation.
  • Maintain accurate and complete accounting records and supporting documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with intercompany accounting and reconciliations, as applicable.

Cash, Treasury & Insurance Accounting

  • Prepare and process checks, wire transfers, and other cash transactions for multiple entities in accordance with established controls and approval requirements.
  • Record and reconcile daily insurance-related activity and cash movements.
  • Partner with Treasury and other internal teams to research and resolve cash and transaction-related items.
  • Maintain premium and benefit-related accounting data and supporting records.
  • Assist with premium tax calculations, reporting, and payments.
  • Support the reconciliation of insurance-related accounts and transactions.

Statutory & Financial Reporting

  • Assist with the preparation of statutory financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with applicable NAIC reporting requirements.
  • Maintain statutory reporting calendars, databases, and supporting information, including applicable state filing requirements and due dates.
  • Support the preparation and review of financial schedules, analyses, and other reporting requirements.
  • Assist with researching and resolving accounting and reporting discrepancies.
  • Develop an understanding of statutory accounting principles and their application within a life insurance company.

Audit, Controls & Special Projects

  • Prepare schedules, supporting documentation, and confirmations for external audits and other financial reviews.
  • Respond to requests for accounting documentation and supporting information in coordination with senior members of the Accounting team.
  • Follow established internal controls and accounting procedures and identify opportunities to improve the accuracy and efficiency of accounting processes.
  • Assist with special projects, analyses, presentations, and other Accounting and Finance initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; candidates in their final semester of an Accounting degree program may also be considered.
  • 1–2 years of accounting experience preferred; relevant internship or co-op experience may be considered.
  • Foundational understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Previous experience with statutory accounting or within the life insurance, property and casualty insurance, or financial services industries is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, including the ability to organize, analyze, and reconcile financial data.
  • Experience with a general ledger or enterprise accounting system is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize responsibilities, and meet established deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND/OR REGISTRATIONS

  • None required.
  • CPA eligibility, active pursuit of the CPA designation, or an interest in obtaining a CPA license is a plus.

LOCATION and COMPENSATION:

  • This role will be based in Denver, CO.
  • This role will be hybrid (3x a week in the office)
  • Base salary is expected to be $60,000 - $65,000* with the opportunity for incentive compensation including bonus compensation.

*Salary may vary based on work experience, market conditions, location, and qualifications/training.
