About the Client

Digital Skills are partnering with a leading global technology business that is continuing to invest in the development of its mobile platform and wider customer experience.

As part of its ambitious vision, the business is expanding its travel insurance and flexibility offerings globally, with a focus on innovation, customer experience and providing travellers with greater confidence and flexibility when making travel arrangements.

The organisation is looking to enhance its insurance and flexibility propositions within its mobile application.

About the Role

  • This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Core Android Developer to join the Insurance team based in Amsterdam.
  • You will play a key role in developing and enhancing two important mobile experiences within a widely used native Android application: Insurance, which provides protection for customers renting vehicles, and Accommodation Flexibility products, which give customers greater freedom to change their travel plans.
  • Working alongside talented UX designers, Android developers, backend engineers, product owners and data analysts, you will contribute to the development of new features, improve application performance and help deliver a seamless customer experience.
  • This role would suit a technically strong Android Developer with extensive hands-on Kotlin and Jetpack Compose experience, who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and is comfortable working within large-scale, high-performance mobile environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and deliver new features for the native Android application using Kotlin, working closely with other Android developers.
  • Collaborate with the wider Insurance Mobile Apps team to ensure a consistent and seamless experience across mobile platforms.
  • Maintain the quality and stability of the application in production, monitoring crashes, investigating incidents and resolving complex technical issues.
  • Take ownership of incident investigations where necessary, prioritising solutions based on customer impact.
  • Continuously improve the performance, scalability and efficiency of the services and features you own.
  • Translate business and product objectives into effective technical solutions.

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of commercial experience developing native Android applications, with Kotlin as your primary programming language.
  • Strong, hands-on experience building production-ready user interfaces using Jetpack Compose.
  • Solid understanding of Kotlin Coroutines and Flow for asynchronous and reactive programming.
  • Experience with modern Android architecture patterns, including MVVM/MVI, Jetpack ViewModel and Navigation.
  • Practical experience with dependency injection frameworks such as Hilt or Dagger.
  • Strong experience writing automated tests, including unit tests, UI tests using Compose or Espresso, and screenshot testing.
  • Experience working with multi-module Gradle projects.
  • Strong understanding of Android development principles, software engineering best practices and application performance.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of full-stack engineering principles and backend software concepts.
  • Experience with A/B testing, experimentation and release planning.
  • Experience with GraphQL, including schema design, queries, mutations and fragments, ideally within a federated environment.
  • Experience profiling Android applications using tools such as Android Studio Profiler, Baseline Profiles and Macrobenchmark.

Summary of the Best Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Android Developer with at least three years of commercial experience and strong expertise in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.

You'll have a solid understanding of modern Android architecture, asynchronous programming and automated testing, alongside experience working within complex, large-scale mobile applications.
