Based in Co. Meath, my client is a long-standing accountancy practice with over three decades of industry experience. The firm provides a comprehensive range of accounting and advisory services to a varied portfolio of clients, from sole traders and small businesses to larger organisations across multiple industries. Their continued success is built on strong client relationships and a commitment to delivering practical, tailored financial solutions.
The Assistant Audit Manager will support the effective delivery of the firm’s audit and accounts assignments, combining strong technical audit and accounting capability with client management, file review, staff supervision and assignment management. The role requires someone who can independently identify and resolve technical issues, provide guidance to junior staff and ensure work is completed to a high professional standard before submission for senior review.
Responsibilities
- Plan, manage and complete audit and accounts assignments for SME, owner-managed and group clients within agreed deadlines and budgets.
- Prepare and review financial statements, year-end files, management reports and supporting working papers.
- Apply strong technical knowledge of auditing standards, FRS 102 and Irish GAAP, resolving technical issues and escalating complex matters where necessary.
- Identify audit risks, assess audit evidence and ensure files are accurate, complete and appropriately documented.
- Deal with client, bank and Revenue queries, including Revenue audits where required.
- Schedule assignments, allocate resources and monitor progress, budgets, fees, WIP and recoverability.
- Review audit files and accounts assignments before submission for senior, Director or Responsible Individual review.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, firm procedures and processes.
- Contribute to updating audit programmes, procedures, accounts templates and technical guidance.
- Achieve agreed fee, quality and delivery targets.
- Support the firm’s System of Quality Management, including ISQM 1 and, where relevant, ISQM 2.
- Assist with internal file reviews, root cause analysis, quality improvement and remedial actions.
- Support audit monitoring and regulatory reviews, including Chartered Accountants Ireland/CARB visits.
- Promote professional scepticism, consistent documentation and timely file completion and archiving.
- Manage day-to-day client relationships, ensuring effective communication and high-quality service delivery.
- Keep clients informed of progress, information requirements and emerging issues.
- Coordinate with other departments, identify additional service opportunities and escalate significant technical, commercial or compliance matters.
- Supervise, mentor and support junior team members, delegating work according to experience and competence.
- Review work promptly, provide constructive feedback and contribute to technical training and knowledge sharing.
- Support the Audit Manager and senior management in developing the team and maintaining professional standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- ACA, ACCA or equivalent qualification, or at an advanced stage with appropriate relevant experience.
- Strong external audit experience within an accountancy practice, including managing assignments from planning to completion.
- Experience reviewing work and supervising or developing junior staff.
- Experience with SME and group clients is desirable; exposure to regulatory reviews, ISQM processes and audit quality remediation is advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of auditing standards, FRS 102, Irish GAAP and financial statement preparation.
- Understanding of audit risk, evidence assessment, professional scepticism and audit quality requirements.
- Familiarity with ISQM 1 and awareness of ISQM 2.
- Strong planning, organisation, communication and client relationship skills.
- Commercial awareness, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgement and escalate issues appropriately.
- Good working knowledge of audit, accounts production and Microsoft Office software.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary €65,000-€75,000
- 10 % bonus
- Hybrid working and early finish on Fridays
- 20 days holidays
