Assistant Project Manager

Locations: Chancery Lane, London or Team Valley, Gateshead (hybrid) | Permanent, full-time

We are seeking a motivated Assistant Project Manager with a construction background to join our growing teams in London and the North East. If you have at least one year’s experience in a construction project environment and want to develop your career in project management, we would like to hear from you.

About the Role:

As an Assistant Project Manager, you will support our Project Managers in delivering construction projects across the full delivery lifecycle and all stages of the RIBA Plan of Work. Reporting to the Director of Project Management, you will help coordinate design, procurement and site activities; assist with managing programme, cost, quality and risk; and act as a point of contact for clients, consultants, contractors and internal teams. As you gain experience, you will take responsibility for smaller projects and work packages, with support from senior colleagues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the planning and management of construction projects through all stages of the RIBA Plan of Work, from mobilisation and pre-construction through to commissioning and handover.
  • Help prepare, update and monitor project programmes, milestones and resource plans.
  • Assist with coordinating architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
  • Support procurement activities, including preparing tender packages, tracking returns and monitoring material lead times.
  • Track budgets, variations and project costs, and provide information to Project Managers and commercial colleagues.
  • Maintain project risk and issue registers, and support change control processes.
  • Support compliance with health and safety requirements, site procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Carry out site visits and inspections, and help manage defects lists and completion documentation.
  • Attend progress meetings, take minutes, track actions and help prepare project reports.
  • Build good working relationships with clients and stakeholders, raising issues promptly with the Project Manager.
  • Manage project documentation, including drawings, specifications, correspondence and records.
  • Take responsibility for smaller projects or work packages as your experience develops.

Requirements:

  • At least two years’ experience in a construction project environment, such as project management, site management, contract administration or a related role, on fit-out, refurbishment and/or new-build schemes.
  • A relevant qualification in Construction Management, Project Management, Building, Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • A good understanding of construction methods, the RIBA Plan of Work and the construction process.
  • An awareness of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, the Building Safety Act and other relevant UK health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Ability to read drawings, specifications and technical information.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the confidence to deal with clients, consultants and contractors.
  • Excellent organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • A proactive approach, a willingness to learn and the ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office.

The following would be advantageous but are not essential:

  • Experience using project planning software such as Microsoft Project, Asta Powerproject or Primavera P6.
  • Some exposure to JCT and/or NEC forms of contract.
  • A valid CSCS card.
  • Student or associate membership of, or progress towards membership of, the APM, CIOB, RICS or another relevant industry body.
  • A full UK driving licence (essential for the North East office).

Company Benefits:

  • Competitive salary
  • 25 days’ annual holiday plus bank holidays
  • Death in service insurance
  • Hybrid working: three days in the office, with the balance from home or on site
  • Summer and Christmas team-building days
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Annual appraisals and pay reviews
  • London: central office close to Chancery Lane station
  • North East: free on-site parking
