External Relations at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the role of Associate Director of Business Intelligence & Analytics. The University of Virginia has a strong and reputable advancement community, boasting effective, results-oriented, and resourceful professionals. Our community comprises a robust central advancement organization, 12 University schools, and more than 25 University-related programs. We offer a wide variety of career opportunities, as well as an outstanding environment for professional growth and development.
Position Summary
The Associate Director of Business Intelligence & Analytics is a senior individual-contributor role within University Advancement, responsible for translating broad and complex data streams into actionable insight for Advancement leadership, prospect managers, and front-line development officers. This role is central to the analysis of the institution's prospect pipeline, the design and administration of the data warehouse and reporting infrastructure that supports it, and the governance practices that keep Advancement data accurate, secure, and usable. The Associate Director combines hands-on technical work — data warehouse development, ETL design, dashboard and report creation — with vendor and stakeholder engagement and strategic guidance on how data and analytics can advance fundraising performance. This position has no direct reports but serves as a technical resource and mentor to colleagues on the Business Intelligence team.
Responsibilities
Technical Resource & Collaboration
• Lead individual projects and contribute actively in team meetings, helping set technical direction and maintain a consistent standard of quality across Business Intelligence work.
• Serve as a technical resource and mentor to colleagues on the Business Intelligence and Prospect Management & Research teams and represent the department through presentations and training for partners across the organization.
• Liaise with partners across the university on data projects, practices, and procedures.
• Review systems and processes on an ongoing basis and advise leadership on potential improvements and recommendations.
• Evaluate reporting products and vendor-provided packages for their effectiveness in supporting Advancement's business needs.
Prospect Pipeline Analysis & Reporting
• Analyze the university's prospect pipeline to generate insights that drive fundraising activity and strategy.
• Conduct strategic data review and analysis, producing reports and data extracts using SQL, Tableau, and other BI tools, and translate that analysis into recommendations that inform business process.
• Support effective management of the prospect pool and pipeline by applying sophisticated data manipulation and reporting skills across all areas of prospect and pipeline development.
• Conceptualize, analyze, and contribute to the design of unit-wide data visualizations and reports assessing portfolios, pipelines, and development officer and unit progress against performance and campaign goals.
• Review, monitor, and contribute to prospect and proposal pipeline data through custom report audits, extracts, data analysis, and ongoing communication with University Advancement partners.
• Provide reporting and analysis support for campaign progress, annual giving, and engagement.
• Contribute to ad hoc data and analytics requests as they arise.
Data Warehouse, ETL & Systems Administration
• Design, build, and maintain Snowflake data warehouse objects — including dynamic tables, stored procedures, and user-defined functions — to support scalable, efficient reporting infrastructure.
• Develop and maintain fact and dimension models that support a robust data warehouse and reporting architecture.
• Apply a strong understanding of source-to-target ETL processes and multi-layer database design to ensure data integrity across systems.
• Manage database permissions and roles to ensure appropriate data governance, security, and access control.
• Create and modify AWS AppFlow configurations to support data integration and flow between systems.
• Administer Tableau Server, including sites, permissions, data sources, and publishing workflows.
• Administer Salesforce, including users, permissions, and data configurations supporting Advancement business needs.
• Lead data conversion efforts, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data migrated across systems and platforms.
• Manage and collaborate using Azure Git Repos for version control of code, scripts, and database objects.
Professional Growth
• Pursue professional development opportunities that enhance job performance, including advancing analysis and visualization skills, conference attendance, and building networks within the university and at peer institutions.
• Remain current on philanthropic trends affecting higher education.
• Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical audiences, excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts to varied stakeholders, demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment sound judgment regarding data privacy, security, and governance, a collegial, service-oriented approach to working with internal partners and cross-functional teams, and the ability to informally mentor and share technical expertise with colleagues without formal supervisory authority.
