Job Description
Reports to: Supervisor. Contract type: Full-time.
Location: Abuja (hybrid). Open only to people who already live in or around Abuja
The role:
As an Associate, you lead the work on several of our clients at the same time, often in different sectors. You are responsible
for their numbers being complete, correct, and ready to use; you are their day-to-day contact at CA, and a Supervisor
reviews your work and writes the monthly report before anything goes to the client's management. The work runs to firm
monthly deadlines across several clients at once, and month-end is demanding.
We are looking for someone who has chosen this line of work, wants to be the person business owners rely on for their
numbers, and wants to grow into a senior reviewer and trusted adviser.
What you will do
- Lead your clients day to day: be the client's main contact at CA, work through issues with their finance team each
week, answer every message within one working day, and raise problems before the client has to ask.
- Review the books and direct corrections: review the Analysts' or the client's team's bookkeeping, reconciliations,
payroll and tax returns in detail, including every reconciliation and every payment that needs a closer look, such as
payments to owners, new suppliers, changed bank details, manual journals and cash withdrawals. Send back what is
wrong with clear corrections.
- Check the financial controls: confirm that approvals, separation of duties and the client's own checks are working as
they should, and raise any weakness and follow it through until it is fixed.
- Close the month: own each client's close, so every account is reconciled to evidence, the month is complete and in the
right period, and the close happens on the client's timetable.
- Prepare the management reporting: prepare the management accounts, the comparison with budget and the factual
reasons behind each movement, and, for clients where we keep the books, write a one-page summary of the month for
the Supervisor's review.
- Prepare budgets, cash forecasts and analysis: update each client's 13-week cash forecast, build the annual budget with
the client, and prepare the figures and analysis for decisions the client is facing
- Support project and advisory work: on reviews of a client's finance function, improvement projects and funding or
investment work, gather the information, prepare the figures, check the financial models, and lead small, defined
projects as you develop.
- Develop the Analysts: when you send work back, show what was wrong and why, so they get it right themselves next
time.
- Keep your clients on schedule: you lead around three clients where we provide ongoing financial management, or
around seven where we keep the books, so you plan your month across all of them and flag early if a deadline is at risk.
Were this leads
As your work holds up to the standard, you take on more responsibility, towards reviewing others' work and advising clients
directly. At CA, you move up by showing you can do the next step's work, not by time served
Requirements
- Around three to five years of hands-on accounting experience, including month-end close, reconciliations, payroll and
tax. Experience reviewing other people's work is an advantage. Strong candidates outside this range are welcome
where their work shows the standard.
- Professional exams: fully qualified ICAN, ACA or ACCA members are preferred. At minimum, you have completed ICAN
Skills or ACCA Applied Skills and have no more than two papers left to qualify.
- Experience in a multi-client environment, such as an accounting, audit, or outsourcing firm, handling several clients'
accounts at the same time, is strongly preferred.
- Experience preparing management accounts and explaining what drives each movement, not only presenting the
figures, and experience with budgets or cash forecasts.
- An understanding of financial controls: what good approval and review look like in a finance team, and how to spot
when they are not working.
- A working knowledge of PAYE, VAT, withholding tax, and company income tax under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, strong
Excel skills, and solid working knowledge of accounting software. Zoho Books experience is an advantage.
- Careful in your own work and quick to notice when something in someone else's work is not right, even when it looks
right on the surface.
• Clear, professional communication with clients' finance teams and owners, the ability to manage several clients'
deadlines without being chased, and feedback that makes a colleague's work better.
- You already live in or around Abuja, as we do not support relocation, and have your own working laptop and
smartphone, as CA staff work on their own devices inside CA's
Benefits
- Hybrid working, normally two days a week in our Abuja office. Occasional additional attendance may be needed for
meetings, assessments and agreed business needs.
- HMO health coverage and paid annual leave.
- Work beyond the monthly cycle, on reviews of finance functions, improvement projects and funding and investment
work, across several businesses in different sectors, which builds your judgement faster than working on one
company's books.
Apply through the application link with your CV and your answers to the application questions. Shortlisted applicants are
invited to an assessment in Abuja, followed by an interview.
