AWS DevOps Lead – South Africa - Full Remote - R150,000 CTC

I’m working with an AWS Platinum Partner based in South Africa who are looking for an AWS DevOps Lead to join their growing team.

This is a new role within the business, created around a growing number of DevOps requirements across several new projects. They’re looking for someone who can be hands-on technically, lead the DevOps function and build out a team over time.

Initially, the role will be heavily focused on technical delivery, but the aim is for this person to gradually take more ownership of the team, delegate work and help upskill others within the business.

What you’ll be doing:

• Lead and perform hands-on DevOps work across multiple medium/large-scale projects
• Design, build and maintain AWS infrastructure and DevOps environments
• Take ownership of DevOps delivery across new and existing customer projects
• Help build out the DevOps team as the requirements grow
• Delegate work and mentor/upskill other engineers within the business
• Work closely with development teams and have a good understanding of software engineering practices
• Build scripts and automation, primarily using Python or similar
• Get involved with AWS architecture, migrations and modernisation

What they’re looking for:

• Strong commercial AWS and DevOps experience
• Extensive experience working with AWS
• Strong EKS/Kubernetes experience – this is essential
• Experience with EC2 and S3 as a minimum
• ECS experience would be a big advantage
• Good understanding of databases such as RDS/MySQL is beneficial
• Experience with scripting, particularly Python, or the ability to pick it up
• A software development background or good understanding of software engineering concepts
• Around 1–2 years' experience leading or mentoring others – you don't need to be an established people manager
• Experience across multiple projects/environments would be useful
• Any AI/ML or AWS MLOps experience would be a big bonus

The industry you’ve worked in isn't particularly important here. They're more interested in someone with strong AWS/DevOps fundamentals who can work across different environments and is keen to grow into a leadership position.
