Show job description

The Business-Wide Risk Assessment Manager will play a key role within Nationwide’s defences against economic crime by supporting the end-to-end delivery and continuous improvement of the Economic Crime Risk & Compliance-owned Business-Wide Risk Assessment (BWRA). The role holder will help manage the BWRA methodology, tool, guidance, training materials, operating cycle, stakeholder engagement, output review, reporting and associated management information, ensuring the process supports robust identification, assessment, management and oversight of economic crime risk across the Society.

Working closely with business areas across all three Lines of Defence and their Accountable Executives, you will provide advice, support, training and challenge to help stakeholders understand and apply the BWRA methodology consistently. This includes supporting them to articulate their inherent economic crime risks, assess the design adequacy and operating effectiveness of mitigating controls, provide clear evidence and rationale, and demonstrate accountability for managing risks within the appetite set by the Nationwide Board.

This is a full-time role and will directly support the Senior Economic Crime Risk Assessment Manager. You will help coordinate an effective pan-Nationwide BWRA operating cycle, oversee completion of assessment activity in line with the published methodology, quality assure submissions and supporting evidence, track actions and issues through to appropriate closure, and support clear reporting for senior management and governance forums.

The role will involve reviewing and analysing BWRA outputs, identifying themes, trends, potential issues and enhancement opportunities, and challenging outcomes where required to support consistent and evidence-based assessment results. You will also support escalation, proactive issue management and reporting through the Senior Economic Crime Risk Assessment Manager and agreed governance routes.

You will also support threat assessment and horizon scanning activity, helping ensure the BWRA methodology, tool, guidance, training and reporting remain aligned to emerging economic crime threats, legislative developments, regulatory expectations and changes to Nationwide’s business model, products, services and control environment.

If you have strong business-wide risk assessment experience, excellent stakeholder management skills, first-class report writing capability and the ability to simplify complex issues for a broad range of audiences, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to how Nationwide understands, evidences, governs and manages economic crime risk for the benefit of its members.

The role sits within Economic Crime Risk & Compliance and supports the Head of Governance, Reporting and Management Information (MI). The team plays a central role in Nationwide’s economic crime defences by owning and managing the BWRA tool, methodology, operating cycle and reporting framework.

The main purpose of the role is to manage the effective operation of the BWRA, supporting business areas across all three Lines of Defence to identify and articulate the inherent economic crime risks within their processes and assess the design adequacy and operating effectiveness of the controls that mitigate those risks.

The impact on our members is significant. By helping ensure economic crime risks are understood, assessed, controlled and reported effectively, the role supports Nationwide’s ability to protect members, maintain trust, meet regulatory expectations and operate responsibly within Board-approved risk appetite.

We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this role, you'll be based at your nearest regional office or hub. We value time spent together to connect with colleagues for collaboration so there will be a regular requirement to attend our Swindon or London site approximately once per month. If you are based at an office location, you'll be expected to meet our hybrid working requirement of at least two days a week, or 40% of your working time if part-time, in the office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

What you’ll be doing

You will support the Senior Economic Crime Risk Assessment Manager in managing and syndicating the BWRA tool, associated training materials and bespoke methodology, ensuring they remain aligned with relevant regulatory requirements. You will also design and deliver BWRA training to promote a consistent understanding and application of the methodology across relevant stakeholders.

You will manage an effective Nationwide-wide BWRA operating cycle and reporting framework, while overseeing the completion of the BWRA exercise in line with the published methodology. In addition, you will work collaboratively with the wider Economic Crime Risk & Compliance team and stakeholders across the business to ensure BWRA objectives are delivered within agreed timescales.

You will review and analyse BWRA outputs, identifying potential issues and constructively challenging outcomes where appropriate. You will also assess the quality and completeness of submissions, supporting evidence and rationale, ensuring outputs are robust, consistent and suitable for senior management and governance reporting.

Additionally, you will provide proactive issue management, escalation and reporting relating to the BWRA tool, its completion and associated reporting through agreed governance channels. You will support the tracking of actions, issues and enhancement opportunities through to resolution, helping to ensure clear ownership, accountability and timely delivery.

You will participate in threat assessment and horizon-scanning activities, ensuring the BWRA tool, methodology and reporting continue to reflect emerging economic crime risks, legislative developments and regulatory expectations. You will also identify opportunities to improve the BWRA methodology, tooling, guidance and reporting, helping to create a simpler, more consistent and effective assessment process.

Finally, you will develop and distribute regular and ad hoc BWRA reporting, including the production of management information outside the annual post-completion reporting cycle.
