Contract: Until 18 December 2026

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to support the development of test engineering solutions across defence and commercial technology projects.

You will join a collaborative engineering team, developing software that interfaces with hardware and supports the testing of advanced sensor and protection products. Previous defence industry experience is not essential; applications are welcomed from engineers across other sectors.

The role

• Design, develop and maintain software using C++ and object-oriented development principles.

• Develop test applications and frameworks that support hardware and electronic systems.

• Create intuitive user interfaces, drawing on HMI, GUI and UX experience.

• Develop applications for Windows and Linux environments.

• Define and document machine-to-machine interfaces.

• Contribute to microservices architectures and containerised solutions.

• Work closely with software, firmware, electronics and test engineers.

• Follow agreed design and coding standards within an iterative development environment.

Skills and experience

• Strong C++ or relevant object-oriented software development experience.

• Familiarity with electronics, lower-level firmware and hardware interfacing.

• Experience developing test frameworks and automated tests.

• Experience creating or interpreting technical interface documentation.

• Knowledge of microservices and containerisation.

• Experience developing HMI or GUI applications, with an understanding of user experience.

• Experience developing applications for Windows and Linux.

• Familiarity with Agile or other iterative development approaches.

• Experience using tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps and Git.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across engineering disciplines.

Useful additional experience

• Python, C# or LabVIEW.

• CUDA integration for AI or machine learning applications.

• Industrial communication protocols.

• Infrared technologies.

• A relevant qualification in software engineering, computer science, physics or a related discipline.

Working arrangements

This role requires attendance at the Southampton office approximately 2–3 days per week. Onsite requirements may vary according to project activity and the support needed by the wider engineering team.
