CDIs are Deaf or hard-of-hearing professionals who provide specialized interpretation services by facilitating communication between Deaf individuals, hearing individuals, and other language users. CDIs work collaboratively with hearing ASL interpreters to ensure accurate, culturally appropriate, and effective communication, particularly in situations involving complex language needs, linguistic differences, or individuals with limited conventional ASL proficiency.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide professional CDI services in various settings, including medical, legal, educational, and social services.
  • Collaborate with hearing ASL interpreters to facilitate accurate and effective communication.
  • Interpret and convey messages using appropriate ASL variations, visual communication methods, gestures, and other communication strategies as needed.
  • Adapt communication approaches to accommodate individuals with limited ASL proficiency, unique language needs, or diverse communication styles.
  • Ensure communication is culturally and linguistically appropriate while maintaining the speaker's intended meaning.
  • Adhere to confidentiality requirements, professional ethics, and industry standards.
  • Maintain professionalism, impartiality, and accuracy throughout all interpreting assignments.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) certification or other applicable recognized qualifications.
  • Strong proficiency in ASL and an understanding of Deaf culture, language variations, and communication needs.
  • Experience working collaboratively with hearing ASL interpreters.
  • Ability to assess and adapt to varying communication styles and language proficiency levels.
  • Strong interpersonal, professional, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in medical, legal, educational, and other professional environments.

If you are a qualified CDI looking to expand your interpreting opportunities and contribute to accessible communication, we would love to hear from you! We welcome experienced professionals who are committed to providing high-quality, culturally and linguistically appropriate interpreting services.

  • Facilitate communication with Deaf individuals who have limited proficiency in standard ASL.

  • Interpret for individuals who use unique signs, gestures, home signs, or nontraditional communication methods.

  • Assist individuals with limited language development or who have difficulty understanding conventional ASL.

  • Provide culturally and linguistically appropriate interpretation.

  • Support communication in medical, legal, mental health, educational, and other specialized settings.
