Position Description

EIP is seeking a highly motivated Energy Management Consultant to support commercial and industrial facilities in Chicago, Illinois, through utility-sponsored energy efficiency and Strategic Energy Management (SEM) initiatives. This position combines energy management coaching, facility assessments, technical analysis, and customer engagement to help organizations identify energy-saving opportunities, improve building performance, and implement sustainable energy management practices.

The Energy Management Consultant will work directly with facility managers, building operators, and other stakeholders to evaluate energy consumption, identify operational improvements, and develop practical strategies for reducing energy use and costs. Responsibilities include conducting one-on-one coaching sessions, facilitating educational workshops, reviewing facility energy performance data, and collaborating with dedicated engineering staff to assess building systems and identify energy conservation measures. The consultant will also support the development of energy reduction targets, savings estimates, and actionable improvement plans aligned with program objectives and customer priorities.

The Energy Management Consultant will collaborate closely with engineering, program management, and customer-facing teams to support technical assessments, communicate findings, track customer progress, and advance energy efficiency projects toward implementation. This role requires strong technical knowledge, analytical capabilities, and the ability to translate complex energy concepts into practical recommendations. The ideal candidate has at least five years of relevant experience in energy engineering, energy management, technical consulting, or facility energy efficiency initiatives, along with strong communication, coaching, and project coordination skills.

Objectives of this Role

  • Energy Management Coaching: Empower and support commercial and industrial facility managers in adopting sustainable energy practices, identifying improvement opportunities, and achieving long-term energy efficiency goals.
  • Change Management: Promote continuous improvement by helping facility managers establish energy management strategies, implement operational changes, and encourage energy-efficient behaviors.
  • Customer Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with facility managers, program stakeholders, and technical partners to support program participation and successful energy management outcomes.
  • Facility Assessments: Collaborate with dedicated energy engineering staff to evaluate existing building systems, operating conditions, and energy consumption patterns to identify actionable energy and demand reduction opportunities.
  • Savings Analysis: Develop and review accurate, transparent estimates of energy, demand, and cost savings using approved program methods, engineering calculations, and appropriate technical reference materials.
  • Project Development: Support the development of feasible energy efficiency improvement plans that account for facility operations, customer priorities, implementation costs, and operational constraints.
  • Technical Quality: Maintain accurate technical documentation, apply relevant industry standards and best practices, and ensure engineering recommendations and savings estimates are supported by reliable data.
  • Customer Education: Communicate technical findings, energy-saving recommendations, and program requirements clearly to facility personnel and stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Program Delivery: Complete assigned assessments, coaching activities, technical deliverables, and progress reports on schedule while supporting customer satisfaction and program performance goals.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • Provide Energy Management Coaching: Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions with commercial and industrial facility managers to address energy management challenges, identify improvement opportunities, and encourage sustainable operational practices.
  • Facilitate Training and Workshops: Lead educational workshops, training sessions, and customer discussions focused on energy conservation, building performance, and effective energy management strategies.
  • Support Facility Assessments: Collaborate with dedicated energy engineers to conduct facility assessments, evaluate existing building systems, collect operational data, and identify potential energy efficiency improvements.
  • Establish Energy Reduction Goals: Work with facility managers to develop measurable energy reduction targets and action plans aligned with organizational priorities and utility-sponsored program objectives.
  • Analyze Energy Performance: Review utility consumption data, equipment information, and facility operating practices to identify energy trends, evaluate performance, and recommend practical improvement opportunities.
  • Develop Savings Estimates: Apply engineering calculations, approved program methodologies, and technical reference materials to estimate potential energy, demand, and cost savings associated with recommended improvements.
  • Provide Technical Guidance: Advise facility managers on energy-efficient technologies, building systems, operational improvements, and implementation strategies appropriate for their facilities.
  • Support Project Implementation: Coordinate with customers, contractors, and internal engineering teams to help translate assessment findings into actionable project scopes and support the implementation of recommended measures.
  • Monitor Customer Progress: Track facility performance against established energy reduction targets, provide ongoing feedback, and support customers in maintaining progress toward their energy management goals.
  • Prepare Technical and Progress Reports: Develop clear documentation summarizing facility assessments, energy performance trends, savings estimates, customer progress, and recommended actions for program leadership and stakeholders.
  • Maintain Project Documentation: Organize engineering calculations, assessment notes, customer communications, technical review comments, and project records while tracking deliverables and communicating potential schedule or technical risks.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Participate in internal meetings with engineers, energy coaches, program managers, and other stakeholders to share technical findings, customer feedback, best practices, and lessons learned.
  • Support Continuous Improvement: Identify recurring technical challenges, customer barriers, and opportunities to improve assessment procedures, coaching strategies, analytical tools, and program delivery practices.
  • Maintain Industry Knowledge: Stay informed of emerging energy efficiency technologies, building performance standards, applicable regulations, and energy management best practices.
