Job Description - Computational Systems Group Lead (103460) Computational Systems Group Lead - 103460 Organization : NE-NERSC Description The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) is seeking a Computational Systems Group Lead to provide vision and leadership during the transition to exascale architectures. NERSC supports over 10,000 users working on energy, climate, and environmental science through high-performance computing (HPC) and data systems. This position will guide a team of skilled engineers, drive innovative solutions, and collaborate with other teams to define and configure systems that ensure operational excellence. The Group Lead will also work with the HPC Technology Department Head to align group priorities with NERSC’s strategic goals. What You Will Do: Lead the Computational Systems Group to ensure timely project completion, define technical scope, and assign tasks. Oversee the installation, testing, maintenance, and 24/7 support of NERSC's computational systems. Manage staff recruitment, mentoring, professional development, and performance, providing feedback to meet goals. Provide technical leadership for system improvements to enhance automation, reliability, performance, and security. Diagnose and resolve system issues, implementing workarounds or patches as needed. Evaluate emerging HPC technologies to improve system capabilities and performance. Contribute to technology evaluations for HPC system procurements and long-term DOE roadmaps. Lead or collaborate on systems programming projects with DOE HPC sites in areas like system management, monitoring, and I/O subsystems. Represent NERSC at conferences, promoting its work to national labs and HPC sites. Collaborate with DOE sites and advocacy groups to represent NERSC in the broader HPC community. Contribute to NERSC’s strategy and management team initiatives. What is Required: Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Computational Science, or equivalent experience; 12+ years of UNIX/Linux experience. 6+ years managing large-scale UNIX-based systems in HPC or WSC environments. Expertise in C and shell/Python programming, and familiarity with HPC processor, interconnect, and storage technologies. Strong knowledge of UNIX/Linux internals. Experience with installation, configuration, and tuning of workload management systems like Slurm or Torque. Proven ability to mentor and develop staff skills. Strong technical and collaboration skills for deploying innovative solutions for NERSC’s diverse user base. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on large projects. Excellent communication skills (oral and written). Strong problem-solving ability, balancing technical solutions with user needs. Proven track record of successfully leading complex projects. Notes: This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. The full salary range of this position is between $168,564.00 to $284,472.00 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $189,636.00 to $231,792.00 per year depending upon candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience. This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. Work may be performed on-site, or hybrid. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
