Show job description

Life After Law is working with a highly reputable and established Vancouver law firm with a sophisticated practice in construction litigation, arbitration and insurance law. Due to continued growth, the firm is seeking one or two talented lawyers with 2–10 years of experience to join its expanding team.

This is an exceptional opportunity for lawyers looking to work on complex, high-calibre matters alongside highly respected practitioners, while enjoying a supportive and collegial environment with reasonable billing targets and competitive compensation, that prioritizes mentorship, professional development and long-term career success.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Work collaboratively with experienced counsel on complex construction litigation, insurance disputes and arbitration matters.
  • Assume carriage of litigation files, managing matters from initial pleadings through discovery, negotiation, mediation, trial or resolution.
  • Advise clients on construction contracts, contract drafting and negotiation, and legal issues arising throughout construction projects.
  • Handle Builder’s Lien claims, including filing, enforcement and related litigation.
  • Provide advice on insurance coverage matters and advocate on behalf of policyholders.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships while gaining increasing independence and responsibility.
  • Gain exposure to commercial litigation, infrastructure disputes, professional regulatory matters and alternative dispute resolution.

Requirements:

The Successful Applicant Will Have:

  • An LL.B/ JD, and be called to the British Columbia bar
  • 2–10 years of post-call experience in construction law, civil litigation, arbitration, insurance law or a related practice area.
  • Strong legal research, analytical, drafting and advocacy skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Sound judgment, attention to detail and the ability to manage files independently.
  • A collaborative, proactive approach and a genuine commitment to professional excellence.
  • An interest in developing client relationships and building a rewarding, long-term legal practice.
  • Prior construction law experience is an asset; however, lawyers with strong litigation backgrounds and an interest in transitioning into construction or insurance law are also encouraged to apply.

Offering:

  • Exceptional Work: Exposure to sophisticated construction, insurance and commercial litigation matters alongside leading practitioners.
  • Work-Life Balance: A reasonable 1,575 annual billable-hour target, significantly lower than many comparable leading Vancouver firms.
  • Competitive Compensation: Salary range of $118,000–$220,000, depending on experience, competitive with firms carrying considerably higher billable targets.
  • Meaningful Mentorship: Partners provide individualized mentorship, hands-on training and opportunities for professional growth.
  • Career Advancement & Financial Upside: Opportunities for mid- to senior-level lawyers to develop their own practices and participate in revenue-sharing arrangements tied to business development and performance.
  • Progressive & Forward-Thinking: A firm that embraces technology, including AI tools, to enhance efficiency and support its lawyers.
  • Flexibility: The firm welcomes candidates from other locations and is open to remote working arrangements for the right individual.

If you are looking for sophisticated, challenging work, competitive compensation and genuine opportunities for advancement—without the traditional big-firm billable expectations—this is an opportunity worth exploring.
