About Us:

STACK is a leading provider of cloud-based construction estimating and takeoff software solutions, committed to helping businesses transform through innovative solutions. We pride ourselves on fostering a collaborative, dynamic environment where team members have the opportunity to grow and make a real impact.

About the Role:

The Controller owns STACK's day-to-day accounting operations and the accuracy of its financial results. This role leads the monthly close, consolidated financial reporting, payables, banking, payroll, commissions, and SaaS metrics reporting across all STACK entities.

The Controller reports to the COO/CFO and manages the Staff Accountants. The role works closely with Sales, Customer Success, HR, and Revenue Operations to make sure every transaction is recorded correctly and every report is one leadership can trust.

Your Most Important Initiatives:

Close and financial reporting

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close on a defined calendar, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
  • Review each entity's financial statements and deliver consolidated financials, with variance commentary, to the COO/CFO
  • Account for SaaS revenue under ASC 606, including deferred revenue, multi-year contracts, and billing-to-revenue reconciliation
  • Maintain the chart of accounts, intercompany accounting, and foreign currency (US and Canada) across entities

Payables, banking, and cash

  • Oversee the accounts payable function, review vendor setup, and approve weekly payment runs
  • Manage banking activity, from account transfers and cash positioning to relationships with STACK's banking partners
  • Support cash forecasting and keep strong controls over payments and bank access

Payroll and commissions

  • Run payroll on a semi-monthly basis for US and Canadian employees, partnering with HR on changes, benefits, and tax filings
  • Calculate monthly commissions from approved compensation plans, reconcile them to CRM and billing data, and gain approval from each department head
  • Account for commission expense under ASC 340-40, including capitalized contract costs and amortization

SaaS metrics and analysis

  • Produce monthly SaaS metrics, including ARR, MRR, net revenue retention, churn, and bookings, from billing, CRM, and accounting systems
  • Reconcile metrics back to the general ledger so finance and revenue teams work from one set of numbers

Compliance, tax, and audit

  • Complete monthly and quarterly compliance reporting, including sales and use tax, 1099s, and lender or investor reporting as required
  • Prepare for and manage the annual financial statement audit and support tax provision and return work with outside advisors
  • Design, document, and maintain internal controls over financial reporting

Team leadership

  • Hire, train, and oversee Staff Accountants, set clear goals, and complete their performance reviews
  • Build a team culture of accuracy, ownership, and continuous improvement

Systems and process improvement

  • Own the accounting system and related tools, and lead improvements that shorten the close and reduce manual work
  • Use automation and AI tools where they improve accuracy and speed, with appropriate review and controls
  • Perform other accounting and finance duties to support the COO/CFO as needed

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years managing or supervising accountants
  • Hands-on experience owning the month-end close and preparing consolidated financial statements under US GAAP
  • Working knowledge of SaaS revenue recognition (ASC 606) and commission accounting
  • Experience running payroll and calculating sales commissions
  • Advanced Excel skills, including lookups, pivot tables, and building reconciliations
  • Experience with QuickBooks or a similar accounting system, plus billing and CRM data
  • Strong attention to detail and a high standard for accuracy
  • An inquisitive approach to accounting transactions from a data perspective
  • Clear communication, including the ability to work with Sales and Customer Support teams to understand and document transactions
  • Leadership and a drive to improve processes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA license
  • Experience at a B2B SaaS or construction technology company
  • Multi-entity and multi-currency experience, especially US and Canada
  • Experience with Salesforce, a subscription billing platform, and a payroll provider
  • Experience leading an annual audit and implementing internal controls
  • Experience using automation or AI tools to streamline accounting work
