Digitisation and Data Quality Project Assistant
Lloyd’s Register Foundation
Location: London - UK
Candidates must have valid work authorization for the respective country
This is an office-based role in central London.
Temporary project position – 12-month Fixed Term Contract
Interested in heritage, history and working with data?
We’re looking for enthusiastic people to join our digitisation programme, working with an extraordinary collection of merchant fleet records spanning more than 260 years.
You don’t need previous experience. We’ll support you to develop the skills you need to work with historic collections and build experience in digital heritage. What we’re looking for is curiosity, enthusiasm and excellent attention to detail.
You’ll be joining a friendly, supportive and ambitious team, making this a great opportunity for recent graduates, people considering a career in heritage, or anyone keen to develop their skills in this area.
About the Role:
Working in a team of two the Digitisation and Data Quality Project Assistants, will support a major heritage digitisation project that is processing information from Lloyd’s Register of Ships to obtain accurate, structured and accessible historic vessel data. The role combines careful handling and scanning of archive material with the detailed review of data produced through optical character recognition and automated processing.
You will work within agreed procedures to digitise source material, check digital images, review low-confidence or quality-flagged data, record corrections and escalate genuinely ambiguous cases. The work is methodical and accuracy is more important than speed alone. It requires sustained concentration, confidence working with repetitive tasks and a commitment to maintaining consistent quality across large volumes of material.
The project subject matter expert (SME) will train the role holder across the core activities, and the role holder will report to them on a regular basis.
What we offer you
- Fixed term of 12 months
- Working in a global company with the ability to work with different cultures and diverse people
- The opportunity to work for an organization that has a strong sense of purpose, is values-driven and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programs
The Role
- Scan historic editions of Lloyd’s Register of Ships using the available digitisation equipment and agreed handling procedures
- Prepare volumes and digital files for processing, including checking sequence, orientation, completeness, legibility and image quality
- Identify pages or volumes requiring further capture, manual intervention or escalation because information is obscured, incomplete or difficult to read
- Apply agreed file naming, folder structures and basic metadata requirements consistently
- Review low-confidence and quality-flagged project outputs against the relevant source images
- Correct clear transcription, formatting or field-allocation errors using agreed interpretation guidance and business rules
- Record corrections, decisions and supporting evidence accurately so that work is traceable and consistent
- Escalate ambiguous, specialist or unusual cases to the appropriate subject matter expert
- Carry out sample quality checks on completed work and raise recurring issues or patterns promptly
- Maintain simple progress records, including volumes or records completed, items requiring rework and outstanding queries
- Work collaboratively with project, library, and archive colleagues and contribute to improvements in guidance and working practices
- Follow archive handling, information governance, health and safety and data security requirements at all times
What you bring
- Good attention to detail and a demonstrable ability to work accurately and consistently with large volumes of information
- Patience and sustained concentration when completing repetitive or highly detailed tasks
- A methodical and organised approach, with the ability to follow documented procedures and maintain clear records
- Confidence using standard digital tools, including Microsoft Excel, Word, file and folder structures and web-based systems
- The ability to compare source images with structured data and identify omissions, inconsistencies or obvious errors
- Good written comprehension and the judgement to distinguish routine corrections from issues that require escalation
- A collaborative approach and willingness to learn from archivists, subject matter experts and project colleagues
