Job Description

We are seeking a highly organized and initiative-taking Director, Construction with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment to support the construction program of our Long-Term Care redevelopment projects. The Director is accountable for the successful delivery of Extendicare's multi-site LTC redevelopment program, which spans new-build and redeveloped homes at various stages from pre-construction through active construction. The program is currently concentrated in Ontario, with expansion into additional provinces anticipated.

Leading a team of Project Managers, you will be the principal construction representative with Construction Managers/General Contractors, Authorities Having Jurisdiction, Consultants, and other stakeholders. This is a hands-on leadership role: you will set the program's delivery strategy and governance, while staying in the detail, reviewing budgets, resolving risk, and stepping in when a project needs it.

This role will be based at our head office in Markham Ontario, Extendicare offers a hybrid working environment. Regular travel is required for this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a multi-project LTC redevelopment program from pre-construction through occupancy and closeout
  • Set delivery strategy, standards, and governance frameworks across the program
  • Establish program controls and KPIs, and intervene proactively when schedule, budget, quality, or operational risk drifts off track
  • Lead a team of Project Managers, each responsible for individual redevelopment projects
  • Review and approve execution plans, schedules, procurement strategies, budgets, and change management processes
  • Run regular project reviews, and drive corrective action where performance issues surface
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, LTC design standards, health and safety regulations, and Ministry requirements
  • Take on direct project responsibility, or co-lead delivery, on select large-scale or complex projects alongside the assigned Project Manager as required
  • Travel regularly to project sites across the portfolio; regular, on-site attendance is a core expectation of this role
  • Own project budgets, cash flow forecasts, and financial reporting
  • Oversee contract administration, progress payments, contingencies, claims, and change orders
  • Identify cost optimization and value engineering opportunities
  • Bring financial analysis and recommendations to executive leadership
  • Build and maintain the program's risk management framework across construction, operational, financial, regulatory, and schedule risk
  • Lead issue resolution and escalation on critical project challenges
  • Report project status — schedule, budget, procurement, risk, health and safety — to Senior Leadership and Development Partners
  • Lead program governance meetings, including bi-weekly construction update meetings to Senior Leadership and Development Partners
  • Act as the primary point of contact between internal leadership, LTC operations, consultants, and contractors
  • Represent Extendicare in community engagement activities as required
  • Mentor and develop your Project Managers and project support staff
  • Set performance objectives and hold the team to them
  • Support succession planning and workforce development

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Project Management, or related field; P.Eng., PMP., CET., or similar designation is an asset
  • 12+ years of progressive construction project delivery experience, including 5+ years in a senior leadership role on large-scale healthcare, institutional or long-term care projects, and/or high-rise residential projects
  • Track record managing new build construction projects valued at $100M+
  • Experience overseeing Consultants, Construction Managers / General Contractors, and owner-side project management teams
  • Familiarity with Ontario's healthcare and LTC redevelopment landscape is an asset
  • Experience delivering projects through various procurement models including CCDC5B Construction Management and CCDC2 Stipulated Sum construction contracts.
  • A combination of owner-side and contractor experience is an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of construction management principles and practices.
  • Advanced budgeting, financial management, and forecast reporting skills.
  • Expertise in risk identification, mitigation, and issue resolution.
  • Strong understanding of project scheduling and critical path management.
  • Thorough knowledge of contract administration and procurement practices.
  • Excellent leadership, negotiation, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and executive reporting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with project management and reporting software.
