This role provides leadership and oversight to ensure compliance with applicable environmental, occupational health, and workplace safety laws and regulations in each jurisdiction in which Artivion operates. The Director establishes global EHS policies and minimum standards, provides subject-matter expertise and guidance to site and functional leadership, and ensures effective systems are in place for risk identification and mitigation, regulatory compliance, incident management, emergency preparedness, training, auditing, and continuous improvement.
The Director partners with site leaders and functional leadership to build a strong EHS culture, establish clear accountability, proactively reduce risk, and drive continuous improvement in EHS performance. The role serves as the Company’s principal EHS advisor, providing leadership with visibility to significant EHS risks, regulatory matters, performance trends, and required corrective actions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Artivion’s global Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) strategy, management system, policies, standards, and programs across all Company locations worldwide.
- Establish global EHS requirements and minimum standards while partnering with site and functional leadership to ensure effective local implementation and compliance with applicable country, federal, state, provincial, and local environmental, occupational health, and workplace safety laws and regulations.
- Serve as Artivion’s principal EHS subject-matter expert and advisor to senior leadership, site leadership, and functional teams on EHS regulatory requirements, significant risks, compliance matters, and emerging EHS issues.
- Establish and maintain a global process for identifying, assessing, prioritizing, and mitigating EHS risks. Ensure appropriate controls and corrective actions are implemented and significant or unacceptable risks are appropriately escalated to leadership.
- Provide governance and oversight of occupational health and workplace safety programs, including, as applicable, hazard communication, chemical safety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, machine safety and guarding, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, personal protective equipment, contractor safety, fire/life safety, and other workplace hazards.
- Lead the Company’s environmental compliance framework, including appropriate management of hazardous materials and waste, chemical management, spills and releases, environmental permits, air and water requirements, pollution prevention, and other applicable environmental obligations.
- Establish and maintain the Company’s global EHS incident management process, including requirements for timely reporting, investigation, root-cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions, regulatory reporting, and escalation of significant incidents and near misses.
- Establish EHS requirements for emergency preparedness and response across Company locations, including appropriate plans, training, drills, and coordination for fire, medical emergencies, chemical releases, severe weather, evacuation, and other applicable emergency scenarios.
- Develop and oversee a risk-based global EHS audit and compliance-assurance program. Ensure findings are appropriately documented, corrective actions are assigned and completed, and significant compliance gaps are communicated and escalated to leadership.
- Establish and maintain global EHS performance metrics, objectives, and reporting. Analyze leading and lagging indicators, identify trends and systemic risks, and regularly communicate EHS performance, significant risks, regulatory matters, and improvement priorities to senior leadership.
- Develop and oversee global EHS training requirements and ensure appropriate programs are established to provide employees, leaders, contractors, and other applicable personnel with the knowledge and competencies necessary to perform their work safely and in compliance with applicable requirements.
- Partner with Operations, Quality, Human Resources, Facilities, Engineering, R&D, Supply Chain, and other functions to integrate EHS requirements and risk management into business processes, facility changes, equipment installations, process changes, new product introductions, and other significant operational activities.
- Promote a proactive EHS culture throughout Artivion by engaging leaders and employees, strengthening accountability, encouraging identification and reporting of hazards and near misses, sharing best practices, and driving continuous improvement in EHS performance.
- Provide EHS leadership and due diligence support, as appropriate, for acquisitions, integrations, new facilities, facility expansions, relocations, and other significant business changes to identify EHS risks, regulatory obligations, and required corrective actions.
- Serve as a key Company representative for EHS matters with regulatory authorities and other external parties, as appropriate, and coordinate the Company’s response to EHS inspections, inquiries, citations, or other regulatory actions.
- Maintain awareness of changes in EHS laws, regulations, standards, and industry practices globally; assess their potential impact on Artivion and ensure appropriate actions are taken to maintain compliance and continuously improve the Company’s EHS programs.
- Provide leadership, functional direction, coaching, and technical guidance to site and regional EHS resources and other personnel with EHS responsibilities, ensuring alignment with Artivion’s global EHS strategy and standards.
