Job Description

The Weatherization Energy Auditor serves as a key member of EBCAP's Weatherization Program, leading comprehensive energy assessments for homes across Rhode Island. In this highly impactful field-based role, you will evaluate residential properties, identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements, ensure compliance with weatherization program requirements, and educate residents on energy-saving practices.
Working independently while collaborating with program staff, you will guide projects from initial assessment through documentation, helping ensure every intervention delivers meaningful results for the families we serve.

Key Responsibilities

Energy Auditing & Home Assessments

  • Conduct detailed residential energy audits using industry-standard diagnostic tools and testing methods.
  • Evaluate insulation, heating and cooling systems, air leakage, and overall building performance.
  • Perform safety inspections, including combustion safety testing and carbon monoxide assessment.
  • Identify health and safety concerns and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Apply Building Performance Institute (BPI) standards and Rhode Island building requirements in all auditing activities.
  • Manage an assigned caseload and coordinate audit schedules to meet program goals.

Grant Compliance & Documentation

  • Prepare accurate audit reports, work orders, and client records.
  • Verify program eligibility requirements and maintain compliant client files.
  • Ensure weatherization recommendations and expenditures remain within established program guidelines.
  • Enter and maintain data within program management systems to support reporting and quality assurance activities.

Vehicle & Equipment Management

  • Maintain assigned company vehicle and ensure it remains clean, organized, and ready for fieldwork.
  • Monitor equipment, tools, and material inventories to support effective program operations.
  • Report maintenance concerns and coordinate vehicle servicing as needed.

Community Engagement & Program Support

  • Educate clients about practical energy-saving strategies and home efficiency improvements.
  • Connect households with additional EBCAP programs and community resources when appropriate.
  • Participate in trainings, quality assurance reviews, and state weatherization meetings.
  • Support departmental initiatives and collaborative projects across the organization.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

We're looking for candidates who bring a combination of technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills, including:
  • Building performance and energy auditing knowledge
  • Blower door testing and combustion safety analysis experience
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
  • Grant compliance and recordkeeping skills
  • Effective communication and customer service abilities
  • Time management and independent fieldwork capability
  • Ability to explain technical information in a clear, practical way
  • Organization, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills

Knowledge and Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Equivalent experience in building science, HVAC, construction trades, or related fields may be considered.
  • Ability to obtain Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst certification within six months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Lead Renovator Certification (RRP) within six months of hire.
  • OSHA 10 certification prior to conducting independent energy audits.
  • Valid Rhode Island driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in weatherization, HVAC, residential construction, or related building trades.
  • Familiarity with Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) requirements.
  • Knowledge of Rhode Island weatherization program regulations.
  • Bilingual skills in English/Spanish or English/Portuguese are highly valued.

Physical Requirements

This position involves active fieldwork in a variety of residential settings. Candidates should be comfortable lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, accessing attics and crawlspaces, and working in confined areas. The role also requires standing, bending, kneeling, and using diagnostic equipment throughout the workday, along with computer-based documentation and data entry responsibilities.
