Lyceum College invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced academic professionals to serve as External Moderators within the Faculty of Humanities. Moderators play a critical quality assurance role, ensuring the credibility, fairness and academic integrity of our assessments across all Humanities programmes. Moderators provide independent oversight of assessment instruments and marked scripts, validate the quality of marking, and support continuous improvement through expert developmental feedback to internal examiners and Module Leaders. Please note: Individuals appointed as External Moderators may not simultaneously serve as Module Leaders or internal academic markers within the same programme or qualification. Moderation Areas (Thematic Clusters) We are seeking moderators with expertise in the following clusters: 1. Criminal Justice and Policing Sciences Policing Practice Criminal Justice Metropolitan and Traffic Policing Criminology Crime Prevention Strategies Police Ethics, Professional Conduct and Liability Community Policing Supervisory Practice for Law Enforcement Media Relations for Law Enforcement Road Safety and Traffic Management Systems Advanced Traffic Science Advanced Fleet Management for Law Enforcement Practice Evidence- Based Traffic Policing Police Liability Issues Police Supervisory Practice 2. Safety, Risk and Disaster Management Disaster Management Safety Management Occupational Health and Safety Environmental Health and Safety Incident Management Risk Management Event Risk Management 3. Legal Practice and Paralegal Studies Introduction to South African Law Criminal Law Criminal Procedure Commercial Law Law of Evidence Office Management for Paralegal Practice Conveyancing, Wills and Estate Matters Debt Recovery Civil Litigation Wills and Estate Management Introduction to Accounting for Legal Practice Property Law Conveyancing Practice 4. Management, Administration and Public Relations Management Principles and Techniques Human Resource Management in Law Enforcement Public Relations and Branding Professional Communication Law and Procedure of Meetings Project Management Corporate Social Responsibility Information and Communication Technology 5. Research and Foundational Skills Research Methods Academic and Digital Literacy Key Responsibilities Pre-Assessment Moderation Review draft examination papers, and other assessments for accuracy, academic integrity, clarity and relevance. Confirm alignment between learning outcomes, module content and assessment tasks. Evaluate marking rubrics and memos for fairness, consistency and appropriate cognitive level. Recommend improvements to language, structure, difficulty weighting and overall design. Post-Assessment Moderation Review samples of marked scripts across all grade bands. Verify consistency, fairness and accuracy of marking. Identify irregularities or risks related to academic integrity. Recommend remarking where necessary to ensure fairness and compliance. Mentorship and Developmental Support Provide constructive feedback to internal examiners and Module Leaders. Offer guidance on improving assessment design, marking quality and academic rigour. Assist in building capacity in assessment practices within the faculty. Reporting and Quality Assurance Submit detailed moderation reports timeously. Flag concerns relating to assessment quality, misalignment or academic risk. Support institutional quality assurance processes and regulatory compliance. Requirements Minimum Requirements A Master’s degree in a relevant Humanities field (essential). At least three years’ experience in higher education teaching and assessment. Strong expertise in assessment design, marking, and moderation. Solid understanding of CHE standards, NQF levels and quality assurance principles. Excellent academic writing, analytical and communication skills. Ability to provide impartial and development-focused evaluation. Access to a laptop/desktop and reliable internet connection. Added Advantage Doctorate in the relevant field or working towards one Experience moderating for private higher education institutions Experience in distance environments Previous work with public higher education institutions Prior involvement in external quality assurance or accreditation processes.
