Role Overview
The Finance & Accounting Lead (FAL) exists to give the founding team a clear, honest picture of Timber's cash, runway, and unit economics — and to ensure Timber is not just fundraise-ready when the moment comes, but can position Timber to scale financially, quickly and safely.
Position / Title
Finance & Accounting Lead (FAL)
Role Classification
Founding Team Member — “Someone joining extremely early and owning a critical function, but not necessarily receiving co-founder-level ownership.”
Reporting Relationship
Reports to the Founder & CEO (Allan Meade) and Chief Operations Officer (COO).
Start Date
To be confirmed in writing between the parties via Offer Letter.
Responsibilities
The Finance & Accounting Lead (FAL) leads Timber's financial planning and strategic financial operations: overseeing financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, cap table coordination, fundraising preparation, and analysis of Timber's business and marketplace economics.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Building and maintaining Timber's financial model, budget, and forecasts • Managing cash flow and runway planning for the founding team • Coordinating the Company's capitalization table alongside legal counsel and the Startup Legal Counsel • Preparing financial materials for fundraising, including data rooms and investor financial diligence • Analyzing marketplace economics (e.g., option fees, packaging fees, take rates) to inform pricing and strategy • Establishing financial controls, reporting cadences, and KPI dashboards for the founding team and Board • Tracking actual spend against budget and flagging variances to the CEO • Modeling different fundraising scenarios and their impact on runway and ownership • Supporting compensation and equity-pool decisions with clear financial context
Qualifications
Strong relevant experience matters more than a specific pedigree.
• Comfortable building and maintaining financial models, budgets, and forecasts in spreadsheets • Strong understanding of startup fundraising mechanics (cap tables, SAFEs/priced rounds) • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills • Prior experience in finance, accounting, or startup operations is a plus, but not required • Comfortable working with incomplete data and evolving priorities
What “Wins” Look Like for this role
Concrete markers that this role is succeeding at Timber's current stage:
• An accurate, up-to-date financial model and runway forecast the CEO and COO can trust and use • Clean, organized financial records and cap table ready for investor diligence • Clear visibility into marketplace unit economics (option fees, packaging fees, take rates) • Fundraising financial materials ready ahead of when they're needed • Reliable, regular financial reporting to the CEO and founding team
Expected Time Commitment
Hours as needed, reflecting Timber's current early development stage. There is no fixed weekly hour requirement; the FAL is expected to commit whatever time is reasonably needed to meet the responsibilities above. This commitment is expected to increase as Timber reaches key funding or traction milestones.
Remote / Work Arrangement
Remote, with core collaboration hours coordinated with the CEO and founding team.
Communication Expectations
Weekly 1:1 with the CEO, participation in the founding-team leadership sync, and prompt (same-business-day) responsiveness on the Company's primary communication channel during agreed working hours.
Outside Activities
Because this is an hours-as-needed engagement, the FAL may hold other employment, consulting engagements, or business activities, provided they do not directly compete with Timber, do not create a conflict of interest, and do not interfere with the availability and responsiveness this role requires. Any potential conflict should be disclosed to, and approved in advance by, the CEO.
At-Will Relationship
This role is engaged on an at-will basis. Either the Finance & Accounting Lead (FAL) or the Company may terminate the relationship at any time, with or without cause and with or without notice. Nothing in this document guarantees continued engagement for any specific period, notwithstanding the vesting schedule described above.
Confidentiality & IP Assignment
As a condition of this role, the Finance & Accounting Lead (FAL) is required to execute Timber's Confidential Information and Invention Assignment Agreement (“CIIAA”) prior to or concurrent with starting work. Under the CIIAA, all inventions, work product, and intellectual property created in connection with Timber are assigned to the Company, and the Company's confidential information (including marketplace, listing, and deal data) is protected during and after the engagement.
