Founding Engineering Lead | Systems, Mechanical & Technology Development

Location: UK / Flexible — remote and hybrid arrangements considered, with hands-on engineering work required

Engagement: Full-time, consultancy or founding leadership arrangement, depending on experience

THE OPPORTUNITY

We’re building something ambitious.

Something that combines physical engineering, complex technology, practical problem-solving and a healthy disregard for the phrase “that’s impossible”.

We’re looking for an experienced, multidisciplinary engineer to become a founding member of our technical team and help turn ambitious concepts into reliable, tested, manufacturable products.

This isn’t a conventional corporate engineering position.

You’ll be joining at an early stage, working directly with the founder, influencing major technical decisions and helping establish the engineering foundations of a growing technology business.

You’ll have genuine responsibility, significant creative freedom and the opportunity to build something from the ground up.

THE MENACE WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Ideally, you’ll bring substantial experience across several of the following:

* Mechanical engineering, mechanisms and product design.

* Systems engineering and complex hardware/software integration.

* Electronics, embedded computing and connected devices.

* CAD, prototyping, materials and manufacturing processes.

* Linux-based systems and practical software integration.

* Reliability engineering, environmental testing and failure analysis.

* Taking products from early prototypes through to commercial production.

* Technical leadership, supplier management and engineering documentation.

Experience in rugged technology, robotics, industrial systems, aerospace, defence, medical devices or similarly demanding environments would be particularly interesting.

Familiarity with local AI, offline computing or resilient communications would be a bonus.

We value demonstrated engineering achievement over particular qualifications, career paths or job titles.

WHAT YOU’LL ACTUALLY DO

You’ll help us:

* Review and strengthen existing engineering concepts and prototypes.

* Design and integrate mechanical, electronic and software systems.

* Identify technical risks before they become expensive mistakes.

* Develop practical, testable solutions to difficult engineering challenges.

* Establish robust testing, documentation and quality procedures.

* Evaluate materials, components, manufacturing methods and suppliers.

* Help define a realistic route from prototype to commercial production.

* Build and eventually lead a multidisciplinary engineering team.

You’ll also need to be comfortable telling the founder when an idea is technically ridiculous.

Preferably before we’ve ordered 10,000 of them.

THE PERSONALITY

We’re particularly interested in people who:

* Have spent years solving problems other people couldn’t.

* Enjoy getting their hands dirty as much as designing complex systems.

* Can work independently without needing a committee to approve every decision.

* Are curious, inventive, practical and occasionally unconventional.

* Understand that engineering discipline and creative thinking are not mutually exclusive.

* Have a sense of humour and aren’t easily frightened by ambitious ideas.

You don’t need to be a menace professionally.

But it would help if you were one intellectually.
