Euromaidan Press, an independent English-language outlet covering Ukraine for international readers, is looking for freelance writers based in Ukraine to write feature articles on Ukrainian culture and history.
We are commissioning three series:
• Icebreakers. Nineteenth-century Ukrainians who kept the language and culture alive between two empires: Kotliarevsky, the Ruthenian Triad, the Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood, Kulish, Marko Vovchok, Drahomanov, Kropyvnytskyi, Franko, and Hrushevsky.
• Born in Ukraine, changed the world. Sikorsky, Malevich, Archipenko, Sonia Delaunay, Krushelnytska, Lifar, and others whom English-language sources often label Russian, French, or Soviet.
• Masterpieces. The stories behind single works such as Black Square, Bilokur's flowers, Earth, and Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors.
Most of these topics have almost no popular coverage in English. Your piece could be the one people find.
We are looking for: strong written English; a background in history, art history, literature, music, or film (students and early-career researchers welcome); and the habit of checking every date and quote against a primary source.
Payment: per piece, depending on experience and length. Remote, based in Ukraine.
To apply: email one pitch (a topic from the series above or your own, in three to five sentences), two writing samples in English, and your CV to euromaidanpress@gmail.com with the subject line "Culture writer application."
