Full Stack Engineer, TypeScript / React / Next.js / Node.js, Amsterdam (remote first)
KEY POINTS
- Build the software that proves climate action is real, tracking carbon credits from creation to retirement
- First in house engineer at a seed stage climate tech startup, with a clear path to lead engineer
- Permanent, full time, remote first, one or two office days a month in Amsterdam
- TypeScript, React and Next.js on the front end, Node.js APIs, PostgreSQL and AWS
- Real ownership: take features from requirement to production, with a fractional CTO as your sounding board
- Integrations with global carbon market infrastructure and payment providers such as Stripe
- Small team of eight, close to break even, Series A planned for next year
- Salary up to €75,000 plus 8% holiday allowance and equity
- Must be based in the Netherlands with the right to work here
WHAT YOU WOULD ACTUALLY BE BUILDING
Our client runs a registry for carbon credits. When a climate project cuts emissions, for example by capping a leaking methane well, managing waste or switching households onto cleaner cooking, it earns credits. Each credit has to be checked by an independent auditor, issued, tracked through every transfer, and finally retired when a company claims it against its emissions.
Their platform is where all of that happens. Buyers include major tech and financial firms. The focus is methane and other super pollutants, where cutting emissions today has the biggest effect on near term warming.
That is the product. The software you write is what makes sure every credit is real and never counted twice.
WHY DATA INTEGRITY IS THE WHOLE JOB
Underneath, it is a relational database of projects and credits with workflows on top: submitting data and documents, bringing in third party reviewers, approving issuance, transfers and retirements. Every record has to be accurate and auditable, because each credit carries real money and a real climate claim.
Project data is messy. One project might send a minute by minute feed from a methane sensor in the desert, another satellite data tracking tree growth. Better tools for taking in and analysing that data are next on the roadmap.
There is a blockchain under the surface, but it is not a big part of this role. If you have worked on payments, fintech or anything where every transaction has to reconcile, you will feel at home.
THE ROLE
First full time in house engineer, working with the Technical Product Manager and a part time backend engineer, with a fractional CTO on hand for the big architecture calls. You will own the platform across the stack and become the go to technical voice in a team of carbon market specialists.
This is not a ticket queue. They want someone who takes a requirement, asks the right questions, then builds, tests and ships it. The lead engineer path is there if you want it, or you can stay hands on as an IC.
WHAT YOU WOULD GET HERE
- Ownership of a production platform from day one
- A clear path to lead engineer, mentoring from a fractional CTO and a salary review after 12 months
- Equity in an early stage company with a Series A planned for next year
- Remote first working with flexible hours, plus a coworking space in Amsterdam shared with other impact startups
- Laptop, home office budget and support for training and conferences
- Work that directly helps cut emissions
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build and maintain the platform across React and Next.js, Node.js and TypeScript APIs, PostgreSQL and AWS
- Turn product requirements into technical specs with the Product Manager, then build, test and ship them
- Design and document secure, well structured REST APIs for the front end and external partners
- Build integrations with carbon market infrastructure, payment providers and partner systems
- Keep registry data accurate and auditable, so every credit, issuance and retirement can be traced
- Look after CI/CD (GitHub Actions), monitoring, backups, access control and performance
- Review code and take on more architecture and ownership as you grow
- Explain technical trade offs and estimates to the team in plain language
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
- 3 to 5 years building and running production web applications, front end and back end
- Strong TypeScript and JavaScript, Node.js (Express or similar) and React (ideally Next.js)
- PostgreSQL schema design and SQL
- Hands on AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda or similar) and CI/CD pipelines
- Good API design, with habits around testing, code review and documentation
- You have taken features from requirement to production yourself, not just worked off tickets
- Clear written and spoken English
- Based in the Netherlands with the right to work here
