Role Description The General Assignment Reporter is a volunteer remote role responsible for covering a wide range of news topics, including breaking news, local stories, and emerging issues of public interest. In this role, the reporter will pitch and develop story ideas, gather information through interviews and research, verify facts, and produce clear, engaging news content across digital platforms. Daily responsibilities include monitoring news wires and social media for leads, attending virtual press briefings, collaborating with editors on story angles, and filing stories on tight deadlines. The reporter will adapt content for multimedia formats when needed and ensure adherence to News Jaunts’ editorial standards, ethical guidelines, and accuracy requirements. This role also involves staying up to date with current events and audience interests to inform coverage priorities.

Qualifications

• Strong reporting skills, including news gathering, interviewing, fact-checking, and working on deadline.
• Proficiency in journalism practices, such as news judgment, ethics, and familiarity with editorial workflows.
• Excellent writing and storytelling abilities, with a clear, concise, and engaging style suited to news audiences.
• Ability to work with multimedia formats (e.g., basic photo, audio, and video handling) for digital publishing.
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Comfort working remotely, with strong time management, self-direction, and collaboration skills using digital tools.
• Experience with online news platforms, social media, and basic content management systems is beneficial.
• Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, fairness, and non-discriminatory reporting that reflects diverse perspectives.
