Overview: Humbli helps lenders measure and improve how they support customers in financial difficulty. Headquartered in Melbourne, we’re growing across Australia, the UK and new products. We’re looking for a Head of Data and Insights to lead the next stage of our data capability, from how we design our metrics to the insight’s lenders act on.
Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, this is a hands-on leadership role in a scale-up, with real influence over the product, our clients and the wider industry conversation. This is a fully remote role, open to candidates anywhere in Australia.
Responsibilities:
- Data strategy. Develop and carry out the data and analytics strategy and roadmap in line with business priorities. Identify data-driven opportunities for growth, and track emerging data technologies, recommending adoption where useful.
- Metric design. Recommend and design metrics on financial difficulty, hardship and vulnerability, including definitions, calculations and data schemas, across mortgages, personal loans, auto loans and credit cards. The thinking on financial difficulty, hardship and vulnerability is shaped with input from the Chief Risk Officer; the role owns the design itself.
- Platform development and continuous improvement. Oversee the development of metrics on Humbli’s platform with our technology partners, including the formulas, testing and sign-off. Lead ongoing testing and continuous improvement of the model, the metrics and the output files. Manage relationships with external technology and data partners, including sourcing and integrating data from external providers.
- Data submission and ingestion. Work directly with financial institutions in Australia, the UK and other markets on their data submissions, from issuing the data schemas through to loading their data successfully into the system, ready for use. This includes data cleansing, ingestion, error checking and validation. Continuously look for tools that make the process more efficient and make it easier for lenders to produce their files and get value from the platform.
- Data analysis and insight. Pull the data, validate its accuracy, generate reporting through Power BI, and interrogate the full data set to prepare unique and meaningful insights. Turn insights into commercial value: advise the leadership team on what the data shows, and work with sales and marketing so insights are used in client engagement and collateral.
- Advanced analytics. Further develop and extend the models, including the development, deployment and lifecycle management of predictive and forecasting models that draw on lender and external data. Validate, monitor and document each model so its results are robust, explainable and stand up to review by clients’ risk and audit teams. Identify opportunities to apply machine learning and AI to enhance the models, improve the efficiency of processes and increase the value lenders get from the platform, ensuring every use is responsible, explainable and in line with the privacy, security and regulatory requirements of each market.
- Presentation. Present analysis and insights to internal and external stakeholders. Represent Humbli on data and insight matters in client meetings and presentations, and in external forums, including industry roundtables, industry bodies and engagement with regulators.
- Data governance. Lead (a) version control of metric and data definitions; (b) data lineage and documentation of calculations; (c) support for client assurance, audit and security questions; (d) handling of data in line with the privacy, security and regulatory requirements of each market.
- Team and capability. Mentor and upskill team members, deepen data capability as markets and products expand, and support colleagues across the business to make full use of the platform and its insights.
Skills and experience: essential
- Experience: 10+ years in data science, analytics or quantitative roles, including at least 5 years in financial services, ideally in lending.
- Qualifications: a bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, actuarial studies or a related quantitative field. A postgraduate qualification is preferred.
- Technical tools: deep expertise in Power BI and strong experience with Microsoft Azure, Humbli’s current platforms. Strong skills in SQL and in Python or R. Able to work across other cloud and reporting platforms (for example AWS or Tableau) as Humbli’s technology changes.
- Analytical and statistical skills: statistical modelling, machine learning and forecasting, applied to large and complex data sets.
- Communication and stakeholder management: able to explain complex data and analysis clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, and to build trusted relationships with clients. Experience presenting analysis and insights to clients and external audiences.
- Self-direction: strong project management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic scale-up environment operating across markets.
- Financial services knowledge: sound understanding of consumer lending products (mortgages, personal loans, auto loans and credit cards) and the regulatory environment for financial services. Experience in credit risk, collections, hardship or customer outcomes is highly regarded.
- Data governance: strong data governance experience.
- Skills and experience: desirable
- Sufficient understanding of data engineering to oversee technology partners’ build, testing and sign-off of data pipelines and models.
- Ability to build metrics directly in Microsoft Azure.
