The Role

We're hiring an HR Manager, based in Malta, to take ownership of the people side of Stakemate across our UK and Malta businesses. Reporting to our CFO, you'll run everything from onboarding and employee relations to training and performance.

The foundations are in place: an HRIS with onboarding and offboarding workflows already built, a policy library, contract templates and handbooks for both entities. Your job is to take them over, keep them sharp, and fill the gaps, so the people side runs smoothly and our leadership team can stay focused on growing the business.

You'll be our one-person HR function for a team of 60+ across London, Leeds and Malta. This is a hands-on role for someone who likes owning a function end to end and wants to be the person everyone turns to on anything people-related.

About Stakemate

Founded in summer 2022, Stakemate is revolutionising sports betting by putting rewarding features and seamless interfaces at the forefront. We've grown rapidly over the last year, and we're just getting started.

Recognised by EGR as one of the most innovative startups in gaming, we're scaling fast and shaping the next generation of sports entertainment. We've built a product that users genuinely love, with unlimited betting group chats, multi-game bet builders, and an experience designed for how people actually want to bet: together.

Revolut disrupted Barclays, Robinhood disrupted Etrade, and Stakemate is executing in the same way to take on the traditional gaming sector.

Must-have

  • 6+ years in HR or People roles, ideally including time as the lead or senior generalist in a small or growing business.
  • Experience across the employee lifecycle, from onboarding through to exit.
  • Comfortable handling employee relations matters, including disciplinaries.
  • Strong written English and well organised.
  • Right to live and work in Malta.

Nice-to-have

  • Exposure to payroll, pensions or benefits admin.
  • Working knowledge of Maltese and/or UK employment law.
  • Experience in iGaming, fintech or another regulated industry.
  • CIPD Level 5+ or an equivalent HR qualification.
  • Hands-on experience with PayFit, Humaans or Workable.
  • Experience supporting ISO 27001 or similar audits from the people side.

You

  • Hands-on by default: you're as comfortable running a payroll check or chasing a training sign-off as you are designing a performance framework.
  • A safe pair of hands: leadership can hand you the people function and trust that it's handled.
  • Trusted and discreet: people bring you difficult conversations because they know you'll handle them fairly and confidentially.
  • AI-first: you look for ways to automate admin and workflows before reaching for more headcount.

What You'll Do

People operations

  • Own onboarding and offboarding across both entities, including contracts, new-joiner vetting and HR set-up for contractors.
  • Run UK payroll through PayFit and prepare Malta payroll inputs for our payroll provider, alongside pensions and benefits such as health insurance.
  • Maintain and improve our HR systems (Humaans and Workable), keeping employee data accurate and our existing workflows up to date.

Policy, compliance and employee relations

  • Own our employee handbooks and HR policies for the UK and Malta, keeping them current and compliant.
  • Manage employee relations cases and disciplinary procedures, liaising with external counsel where needed.
  • Own the people controls behind our ISO 27001 certification, including joiner, mover and leaver processes and the evidence for audits.

Performance, training and development

  • Design a performance review framework that fits a lean, fast-moving team, then run it: schedules, templates, follow-ups and supporting managers through each cycle.
  • Make sure mandatory training is completed and evidenced across the business.
  • Build out learning and development, including manager training and career development.

Hiring and culture

  • Run our hiring process in Workable with hiring managers, from job posts and screening through to offers and contracts.
  • Own engagement, team socials and offsites, internal people comms, and perks.
  • Report on headcount, hiring, attrition and other people metrics to the leadership team.

What We Offer

  • A competitive salary, plus stock options after completing probation.
  • A rare opportunity to join one of the UK's most exciting sports betting startups in the early stages.
  • Real ownership: you'll run HR for the whole business, with direct support from our CFO.

Working Setup

  • A Malta-based role: 2-3 days a week in our St Julian's office, remote the rest of the week.
  • Occasional travel to our London office.
