Position summary
We are a small HR technology consulting firm. We help employers and their benefits partners get more from their HR systems and processes.
The HRIS & Benefits Specialist is the hands-on systems expert on our client projects. You will configure benefits administration and HRIS platforms, test and validate data, build reports, and train client users. You will work closely with brokers and with client HR teams. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports.
Key responsibilities
Systems configuration and implementation support
- Configure benefits administration systems, including plans, eligibility rules, rates, enrollment events and life events
- Support HRIS implementations: data loads, configuration tasks, testing and go-live support
- Build and run test scenarios; log, track and resolve issues
- Troubleshoot carrier and vendor file feeds and data errors, escalating when needed
Reporting and data
- Build standard and custom reports, audits and dashboards in client systems
- Run data audits, such as eligibility, deduction and enrollment reconciliations, and summarize findings for the project lead
Training and documentation
- Deliver training to client HR teams and end users, virtually and in person
- Create user guides, job aids, configuration workbooks and process documentation
- Write and update standard operating procedures
Client support
- Answer day-to-day system questions from client HR teams and resolve support tickets
- Keep project trackers current and report status and risks to the engagement lead
- Spot inefficiencies or repeat issues and bring improvement ideas forward
What we're looking for
- Resourcefulness: figures things out from documentation, testing and vendor support before asking
- Learning agility: picks up new platforms quickly as client needs change
- Attention to detail: catches data and configuration errors before they reach employees' paychecks or coverage
- Problem solving: looks for the root cause, not just the quick fix
- Client service: patient, clear and professional with client HR teams
- Discretion: handles confidential employee and benefits data with care
- Growth mindset: wants to grow into a consultant role over time
Required
- 3–4 years of HR, HRIS or benefits experience
- 2+ years hands-on with at least one HRIS or HCM platform (for example Workday, UKG, ADP Workforce Now, Paylocity, Paycom, Rippling, BambooHR), including some configuration or administration
- Experience with a benefits administration system (for example PlanSource, Businessolver, bswift, Benefitfocus, Employee Navigator or an HCM benefits module)
- Working knowledge of benefits eligibility, open enrollment and qualifying life events
- Strong Excel skills: lookups, pivot tables, data cleanup
- Experience building reports in an HR system
- Clear written communication and experience creating documentation or training materials
Preferred
- Involvement in at least one system implementation or open enrollment build
- Exposure to more than one HR platform
- Familiarity with carrier file feeds (EDI 834, CSV, SFTP)
- Payroll or benefits deduction experience
- Workday experience or certification
- SHRM-CP or PHR, or working toward one
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Information Systems or related field, or equivalent experience
