Junior Software Engineer
Location: London or Leeds - Hybrid
Closing date: Tuesday 27/10/2026
The role..
We are looking for an enthusiastic Junior Software Engineer with at least 2 years of commercial experience to join our software engineering function in CST on a 1-year fixed-term contract to assist with an ongoing project.
In this role, you will focus heavily on cloud infrastructure and platform configuration, helping us replicate, adapt, and deploy serverless functions (e.g., AWS Lambdas), services, and deployment pipelines across our content supply chain. While the primary focus is on infrastructure and CI/CD workflows, our core services are built in Scala, so you will also work with existing codebases to replicate services, make updates, and integrate cloud components. There may also be some work to enhance our existing Scala-based product(s).
To ensure success in this role, you should have an analytical mindset and a logical approach to problem-solving. You will be supported by experienced engineers and receive guidance and mentorship to help you get up to speed quickly and deliver impactful work during your time with us.
The team..
Content Supply and Distribution (CS&D) is a key group within ITV’s Media & Entertainment business that is responsible for managing ITV’s content and data from source to screen across linear and VoD supply chains. The Content Supply Technology (CST) group develops, integrates and maintains the underpinning technology platforms, as well as the supporting functions of business analysis, architecture and project management. All this enables us to deliver ITVs famous and popular content from its multiple sources to our online platforms, to our B2B partners and to ITV’s family of linear TV channels.
As a department we work closely with our colleagues in the ITV business teams and with our closely related operational teams who are responsible for delivering our channels and content reliably, just in time, day in-day out.
Our teams build the technology that brings great content into ITV ready for broadcast, streaming and partner distribution. From handling video files and sourcing metadata for content to scheduling and checking compliance, our systems ensure millions of views get to enjoy their favourite shows.
Main responsibilities
As a Junior Software Engineer, you will:
- Write Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform to provision and manage cloud resources on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Build, update, and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions to support an ad-hoc, continuous deployment delivery model.
- Replicate, adapt, and deploy microservices and serverless components (e.g., AWS Lambdas) across different supply chain products.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose production issues using observability platforms such as Grafana and Prometheus.
- Maintain high system quality and reliability with a strong testing mindset, ensuring infrastructure and service changes never break existing functionality.
- Work directly inside existing Scala/JVM codebases using modern IDEs to update, copy, and integrate microservices alongside senior engineers.
- Collaborate closely with team members through pair programming, knowledge sharing, and active communication within an Agile team.
Skills you’ll need (minimum criteria)
- Minimum 2 years of commercial experience in a software or infrastructure engineering role within a production environment.
- Hands-on experience writing and managing CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions.
- Practical experience or clear exposure to Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and AWS cloud services (e.g., Lambdas, IAM, ECS, S3).
- Experience (commercial or personal projects) in functional programming concepts e.g. Scala, Java Streams API, Haskell, or similar.
- Comfort and fluency working inside an IDE (e.g. IntelliJ IDEA, VS Code) to read, edit, and navigate codebases.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and a logical, step-by-step approach to identifying root causes.
- A rigorous testing mindset, understanding how to verify changes safely before and after deployment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the confidence to ask questions, take direction, and learn rapidly.
Other things we’re looking for (key criteria)
- Hands-on experience with observability tools such as Grafana or Prometheus.
- Understanding of CI/CD concepts and modern deployment models (e.g. ad-hoc, automated, continuous delivery vs. scheduled releases).
- Experience or familiarity with Scala in a commercial environment, or personal projects built using Scala.
- Familiarity with microservices architecture, serverless concepts, and event-driven systems.
- Understanding of automated testing strategies for both code and infrastructure.
