Company Description The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency and an Australian Government statutory authority established in 1972. AIMS is recognised for its advanced capabilities in marine biodiversity, climate change impacts and adaptation, water quality, and ecosystem health. Its research supports the protection and sustainable development of tropical marine resources, benefiting sectors such as fisheries, offshore energy, mining, ports, reef tourism, and aquaculture.

Role Description The Large Area Monitoring Scientist is a full-time hybrid role based in Townsville, QLD, with flexibility for part-time work from home. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and analysing large-scale monitoring programs to assess the health and status of tropical marine ecosystems. Day-to-day activities include planning and conducting field surveys, managing, and processing photogrammetry and ecological datasets. The scientist will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to integrate monitoring data with other research streams, prepare technical reports and scientific publications, and communicate outcomes to stakeholders and decision-makers. The position also contributes to improving monitoring methodologies, supporting quality assurance, and helping align AIMS’ monitoring programs with national and international marine science priorities.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in marine science, ecology, oceanography, or a closely related discipline, supported by a relevant postgraduate qualification (e.g., MSc or PhD).
  • Strong skills in data analysis, including statistical methods, spatial analysis, and handling large, complex datasets using tools such as R, Python, GIS, or similar platforms.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of marine monitoring programs, including field survey planning, sampling methodologies, and data quality assurance and control.
  • Proficiency in remote sensing, geospatial techniques, or large-area observational approaches relevant to monitoring tropical marine ecosystems is highly desirable.
  • Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Sound project management capabilities, including planning, prioritising tasks, meeting deadlines, and working safely in field and laboratory environments.
  • Familiarity with tropical marine ecosystems and knowledge of issues such as climate change, water quality, and ecosystem health, particularly in the Australian context.
  • Commitment to ethical, inclusive, and safe work practices
