2. Job Summary

The successful candidate will deliver undergraduate teaching in climate change, environmental studies, climate-related security, natural-resource management, environmental governance and sustainable development.

The lecturer should combine strong theoretical knowledge with practical and applied learning, helping students understand the connections between climate change, environmental degradation, natural resources, livelihoods, conflict, peace and human security. The lecturer should also encourage evidence-based analysis, environmental responsibility, resilience and sustainable development.

3. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical exercises and other academic activities in assigned climate change, security and environmental studies subjects.
  • Teach relevant areas such as climate change science, climate policy, environmental security, climate-related conflict, natural-resource management, environmental governance and sustainable development.
  • Teach topics related to climate adaptation, mitigation, resilience, disaster risk reduction, environmental vulnerability and climate finance where relevant.
  • Examine the relationship between climate change, water scarcity, land degradation, food security, displacement, migration, livelihoods and conflict.
  • Introduce students to environmental peacebuilding, climate diplomacy, natural-resource governance and approaches to climate-related security risks.
  • Develop teaching materials, case studies, research exercises, policy analysis assignments and practical activities aligned with programme learning outcomes.
  • Use relevant environmental data, climate datasets, maps, GIS tools, case studies and analytical methods to strengthen practical learning where resources permit.
  • Guide students in analysing environmental policies, climate risks, security challenges and sustainable development strategies at local, national, regional and international levels.
  • Set and assess examinations, assignments, presentations, research papers, policy briefs and practical projects and provide constructive feedback.
  • Supervise undergraduate research projects, capstone projects, field studies and internships where assigned.
  • Encourage evidence-based research and critical analysis of climate, environmental and security challenges affecting Somalia, Africa and other regions.
  • Promote environmental responsibility, sustainability, professional ethics and responsible natural-resource management.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, assessment and academic records and submit reports within required timelines.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, research activities, academic events, quality assurance and relevant engagement with government, NGOs, development organisations and environmental institutions.
  • Support interdisciplinary learning connecting climate change and environmental issues with peace, security, governance, development and humanitarian affairs.

4. Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have:

  • A minimum Master's degree in Climate Change, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Security, Natural Resource Management, Climate and Development, Disaster Risk Management, Geography, International Relations, Security Studies, Sustainable Development or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
  • A relevant Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, environmental science, geography, climate science, natural resources, development studies, security studies or another closely related discipline.
  • A PhD in a relevant discipline is an advantage.
  • Relevant university or higher education teaching experience is strongly preferred.
  • Professional or research experience in climate change, environmental management, climate security, natural-resource governance, disaster risk reduction or sustainable development is an advantage.
  • Experience conducting environmental, climate, security or development research is desirable.
  • Experience with GIS, environmental data analysis, climate-risk assessment or other relevant analytical tools is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of international climate frameworks, environmental policies and sustainable development frameworks is desirable.
  • Experience working with government institutions, NGOs, international organisations, research institutions or development programmes is an advantage.

International lecturers will teach online/remotely from their country of residence, while national lecturers are expected to teach on campus in Mogadishu.
