About the team

This role is offered on an initial 18 month contract

Join our Transformation and Technology Services team – a specialist team helping to transform how the NMC delivers its regulatory work.

We’re a centre of excellence bringing together expertise in process management, legal and operational capability, quality assurance, continuous improvement and change. We work across the organisation, combining big-picture thinking with hands-on problem solving to improve the quality, timeliness and experience of regulatory processes.

You’ll be joining at an exciting time as we develop a modern, high-performing legal profession and establish our One Legal Profession approach. This is an opportunity to help shape how legal professionals learn, share knowledge, develop their careers and deliver consistently high-quality legal services.

Please view the statement on our careers page which details how this role supports the vision of the future of Legal Services at the NMC. You'll find this next to the job description section.

Your role & impact

As Legal Professional Services Senior Lawyer, you’ll play a leading role in building the professional foundations of the NMC’s future legal service.

Working closely with the General Counsel as Head of Legal Profession, senior legal leaders and colleagues across the organisation, you’ll help deliver the Legal Services Transformation Programme and establish a consistent, sustainable approach to professional development, knowledge management and support for our legal community.

You’ll lead the design and implementation of legal learning and development programmes, professional standards, induction arrangements and knowledge-sharing frameworks. Your work will help strengthen legal and regulatory expertise, improve consistency in legal advice and support high-quality decision-making across the profession.

You’ll have the opportunity to shape the NMC Legal Capability Framework and associated development pathways, helping lawyers, paralegals and aspiring legal professionals understand what great looks like – and how they can develop and progress.

You’ll also lead work to capture and share the knowledge that makes a great legal profession stronger. From casework, appeals and developments in case law to precedents, guidance and lessons learned, you’ll create practical ways for insight to be shared and embedded into everyday practice.

And you’ll be a key voice in building a culture where learning is continuous, professional standards are clear and people are supported to develop their expertise and careers.

This is a role where your legal knowledge, learning mindset and ability to bring people with you can have a lasting impact on the quality and capability of the NMC’s legal profession.

What you’ll bring

You’ll combine strong legal expertise with a genuine passion for developing people, building capability and improving professional practice.

You’ll bring:
  • Substantial practical or academic legal experience, with a strong understanding of regulatory law and professional standards.
  • Expert capability in legal learning, CPD and knowledge management, with the ability to turn insight from legal practice and regulatory developments into practical learning and development.
  • A strong understanding of how professional standards, supervision, learning and knowledge-sharing can strengthen legal judgement and service quality.
  • The ability to identify emerging legal and professional risks and translate learning from case law, appeals and regulatory developments into clear, useful guidance.
  • A genuine commitment to enabling legal professionals to learn, develop and progress throughout their careers.
  • Strong professional ethics and integrity, with a commitment to role-modelling the NMC’s values, including equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent collaboration and influencing skills, with the confidence to build trusted relationships across the legal profession and with colleagues beyond it.
  • Tertiary-level legal qualifications. A current UK practising certificate is desirable, but not essential.
You’ll be someone who enjoys making complex things clearer, helping others grow and turning knowledge into better practice. Most importantly, you’ll want to help build a legal profession that is confident, connected, continuously learning and ready for the future.
