About the Job
As a Legal Writer for the Removal Team, you will play a vital role by crafting detailed and persuasive declarations, motions, and briefs for asylum and removal defense cases.
Working from questionnaires completed by case strategists, this position requires handling sensitive topics — including accounts of persecution, abuse, and trafficking — with care and empathy, ensuring that each declaration accurately reflects the client's story and supports their legal case.
You will follow up directly with clients to obtain any additional information needed, translate declarations when necessary, and work closely with attorneys and the removal team to meet legal standards, maintain confidentiality, and contribute to the successful resolution of cases.
Responsibilities
#1 Declaration and Document Writing
- Draft detailed and compelling declarations for asylum and removal defense cases, based on questionnaires completed by case strategists.
- Identify information gaps in questionnaires and develop follow-up questions to ensure complete declarations.
- Draft motions, briefs, and legal filings for Immigration Court that cite relevant legal precedents and present case-specific arguments.
- Document sensitive client experiences — including physical abuse, trafficking, domestic violence, and persecution — using appropriate legal terminology while maintaining client dignity.
- Extract and highlight specific case elements from questionnaires that directly satisfy legal requirements for each type of relief.
#2 Document Preparation and Management
- Create case-specific cover letters that accurately summarize enclosed documents and highlight key points for USCIS officers and immigration judges.
- Proofread and correct all legal documents for grammatical errors, factual inconsistencies, and formatting issues before submission.
- Upload completed documents to appropriate FileVine case folders following the firm's digital filing system protocols.
- Apply standardized naming conventions to all documents for consistent organization.
#3 Collaboration with Legal Team
- Attend case strategy meetings with attorneys and case managers to gather specific direction on declaration focus and legal arguments.
- Request and incorporate expert reports from psychologists and social workers into legal documents, properly citing their professional assessments.
- Send weekly progress reports to case managers detailing the status of all assigned declarations and documents.
- Communicate directly with team members to resolve blockers before escalating.
#4 Legal Research
- Search and analyze recent BIA decisions, AAO decisions, and circuit court cases related to the case type using the firm's research systems.
- Compile case-specific research notes that identify relevant legal precedents to strengthen arguments in cover letters, motions, and briefs.
#5 Client Communication
- Prepare specific follow-up questions for clients when declarations contain gaps or inconsistencies that need clarification.
- Conduct direct follow-up communication with clients to gather additional information needed for complete declarations.
#6 Marketing Support
- Draft informational blog posts on immigration topics for the firm's website when requested by the marketing team.
- Translate complex legal concepts into accessible content for potential clients and the general public.
- Research current immigration trends and news to identify relevant blog topics that showcase the firm's expertise.
You're the ideal fit if you:
- Are bilingual (Spanish & English) with strong detail-oriented & communication skills.
- Bring at least 1 year of experience in Immigration Law for U.S.-based firms.
- Plus: Prior experience writing for removal defense or immigration court proceedings.
- Have advanced English proficiency, strong enough to write persuasive, publication-ready legal declarations, motions, and briefs entirely in English.
- Have excellent written communication skills, able to translate complex, sensitive information into clear, compelling, legally sound narrative writing.
- Are comfortable engaging directly with clients on sensitive, personal topics — including abuse, trafficking, and persecution — with empathy, discretion, and professionalism.
- Are highly detail-oriented, with strong proofreading and fact-checking skills to catch inconsistencies before submission.
- Are organized and self-directed, able to manage multiple case deadlines simultaneously using case management tools like FileVine.
- Have strong research skills, comfortable navigating legal databases to find and apply relevant precedent.
