Overview of Steyn Group:
The Steyn Group is a global single family office platform that specialises in private market investments. The Group has established operational and investment platforms across real estate, direct business investment and early-stage investing in the United Kingdom, United States and South Africa. Within these strategies, the Group has a broad investment mandate and is always seeking new ways to leverage resources to tackle some of the key problems in the world.
This role is based in Johannesburg and supports the financial oversight and reporting of the South African investments, as well as international investments including real estate, private equity and venture capital.
Purpose of the Role:
To own the preparation, analysis and presentation of timely and accurate monthly management accounts for the Steyn Group / Steyn Family Office entities and allocated international investments, turning financial data into clear insight on performance against budget and forecast. The role provides decision-useful reporting to the Finance Manager as well as the Global Team, and ensures that financial information is complete, accurate and compliant with accounting standards, Group policies and regulatory requirements.
Additional Context for the Role:
Unlike the transactional finance roles (AP, AR and cash book processing), this role focuses on reporting, analysis, review and control. The Management Accountant reviews and relies on the work of the AP and cash book function and supports the Finance Manager and the wider finance function with budgeting, audits, systems improvements and ad hoc analysis. The finance environment is scaling and changing, with an emphasis on efficiency and increased reliance on software (NetSuite) and automation. Limited travel might be required.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Monthly Management Accounts & Month-End Close
•Prepare monthly management accounts (income statement, balance sheet and cash flow) for the dedicated entities and allocated international investments, in line with the Group month-end timetable.
•Own the month-end close process: post and review journals, accruals, prepayments, provisions, depreciation and intercompany entries.
•Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring all balances are supported, explained and cleared on a timely basis.
• Review the AP, AR and cash book/bank reconciliation work
prepared by the transactional team and resolve escalated
variances.
• Prepare reporting packs and supporting schedules for the Finance
Manager and the Global Team, including intercompany and
consolidation inputs.
• Manage financial records and ensure adherence to accounting
standards (IFRS / IFRS for SMEs as applicable) and Group
accounting policies.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Performance Analysis
• Perform the monthly review of actual vs budget together with the
Finance Manager, preparing variance analysis and clear
commentary to present to the Group.
• Lead preparation of the annual budget and periodic reforecasts for
allocated entities, working with the Finance Manager and operating
teams.
• Prepare and maintain rolling cash flow forecasts and monitor
liquidity and funding requirements across the portfolio.
• Analyse performance at P&L level and develop KPI reporting for the
investments and/or entities.
• Track private equity and venture capital investments, including
capital calls, distributions, valuations and investment performance
reporting.
• Provide financial guidance and ad hoc analysis (e.g. business
cases, cost analysis, scenario modelling) to support decision making.
Audit, Compliance & Controls
• Prepare audit files and supporting schedules, act as a key contact
for external auditors, and assist with the preparation of annual
financial statements.
• Support statutory and tax compliance (e.g. VAT, provisional and
income tax) in liaison with external tax advisers and the Finance
Manager.
• Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls, approval
workflows and segregation of duties; identify and escalate control
gaps.
• Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and Group policies
across allocated entities.
Systems, Process Improvement & Automation
• Use NetSuite as the primary accounting system: maintain chart of
accounts, entity/subsidiary structures and reporting templates for
allocated entities.
• Identify and implement process improvements and automation to
shorten the close and improve reporting quality.
• Build and maintain robust Excel models and reporting tools, with
clear documentation of processes and procedures.
Stakeholder Management & Collaboration
• Report directly to the Finance Manager and work closely with the
Global Team and/or stakeholders.
• Collaborate with internal staff, operating teams, asset managers and
external partners (auditors, tax advisers, banks) to foster synergy
and alignment in achieving organisational objectives.
• Provide guidance to, and review the work of, the AP and Cash Book
function; share knowledge and support the development of junior
finance staff.
• Assist the Finance Manager and wider finance function with ad hoc
queries, reporting and projects.
Applicants should have a minimum of five years’ proven experience , BCom Accounting (or equivalent) is essential. Professional accounting designation – CA(SA), CIMA (CGMA) or SAIPA is desired.
