Mechanical Engineer · North Melbourne VIC · Full time · Hybrid (2 days from home) · $90,000 – $100,000 per year

About the opportunity

DTCo is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our North Melbourne team. Our clients need more engineering capacity to support long-term projects across defence, food processing, manufacturing and healthcare.

You'll take work from concept through detailed design to production release, delivering on time, on budget and to the standards our clients and regulators expect. One project might be defence equipment, the next a food-grade processing line, production machinery or a medical device.

About DTCo

The Design Technology Company (DTCo) is a Melbourne-based mechanical engineering and design consultancy. We bring order to complexity, helping clients take ideas from early concept through to manufacture. We work with defence primes, manufacturers, food producers and healthcare companies, so no two projects are the same.

Your responsibilities will include

• Mechanical design and development of components, assemblies and systems, from concept to production release

• Interpreting client scope correctly and applying the relevant engineering requirements, specifications and standards to each design

• Engineering analysis, including design calculations, tolerance stack-ups, material selection and FEA where required

• Ensuring designs comply with statutory and regulatory requirements, Australian Standards and client specifications

• Producing and checking 3D models, drawings and technical documentation, and maintaining design records and change history

• Guiding our drafting team and reviewing drawings for accuracy before release

• Working with clients, suppliers and manufacturers to resolve design and production issues

• Tracking your tasks against project schedules and flagging risks early

Baseline requirements

• Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical or Mechatronics)

• 2 to 5 years' post-graduate experience in a mechanical design or design engineering role

• Proficiency in well-structured, complex 3D CAD modelling in Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks or similar, plus AutoCAD

• A solid understanding of manufacturing methods (fabrication, machining, sheet metal) and design for manufacture

• Working knowledge of AS 1100 drawing standards and GD&T

• A strong ability to write technical documents and specifications for mechanical components, assemblies and systems, and communicate them clearly

• Australian citizenship and eligibility for Baseline security clearance

Highly advantageous skills

• Experience on defence, food-grade or medical device projects

• FEA or other engineering analysis tools

• Configurations or Model States in CAD

• Electrical routing in CAD

• PDM or PLM systems

• Other CAD software such as MicroStation, ShipConstructor or NX

• Cloud tools such as OneDrive, and project management tools such as Planner or Trello

• A current Australian Government security clearance

Personal attributes

Bringing these to the table will set you apart:

• Excellent communication: essential for remote collaboration and our culture of knowledge sharing

• Problem solver and reporter: you solve challenges, then share your insights and solutions with the team

• Team player: you collaborate well and draw on the expertise of the wider team

• Energy: your enthusiasm is infectious and drives positive outcomes

Why join DTCo?

We run a tight ship but a social one. We take pride in the team we continue to build, the problems we solve and the way we present ourselves.

• Hybrid work: 3 days in our North Melbourne office, 2 days from home

• Flexible start and finish times (within reason)

• Real variety across defence, food, manufacturing and healthcare

• Exposure to the latest technologies, software and workflows

• A thriving, growing business with a steady pipeline of work

• Room to grow for self-starters who seize opportunities, think critically and go beyond the obvious

At DTCo we're committed to a safe and inclusive workplace. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people of all backgrounds, ages, genders and abilities. Veterans are also encouraged to apply.
