This role supports microinsurance projects through research, product development, project coordination, reporting, and client support in developing markets. It also helps with proposals, internal initiatives, limited remote work from the Appleton, Wisconsin area, and occasional international travel.

Job Duties

  • Support microinsurance product development-related activities
    • Prepare drafts of product prototypes and protocols
    • Support prototype testing and willingness to pay exercises
    • Review term sheets
    • Develop microinsurance implementation processes and protocols
    • Set up pilot testing plans and support implementation
    • Support development of partnerships with key stakeholders (insurance companies, distribution partners, government)
  • Research and consulting activity support for client projects related to microinsurance in developing economies
    • Conduct desk research, including online surveys or phone interviews
    • Develop research plans, questionnaires, and other qualitative and quantitative research tools
    • Maintain expertise in the economic conditions of Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya
    • Support training and monitoring of field research partners
    • Perform data cleaning, analysis, and visualization for projects
    • Prepare drafts of reports or deliverables, edit, or proof-read
    • Perform other inputs to projects accordingly to ability and interest
  • Project setup
    • Develop project timelines and work plans in Excel or project management software
    • Prepare Statements of Work (SoWs) and contracts for sub-contracted consultants
  • Project planning and implementation
    • Liaise with clients
    • Coordinate, schedule, and plan project activities in collaboration with staff and consultants
    • Track and manage project budgets
    • Draft, in collaboration with appropriate consultant, in-country mission agendas
    • Track and monitor project activities and deliverables to ensure completion within the project timeline
    • Prepare components of or full (depending on project) project reports for clients, and internal project management updates to senior staff
    • Facilitate communications and coordinate meetings between consultants, clients, and other project stakeholders
    • Facilitate structured team feedback sessions in order to improve current or future practices
    • Track and coordinate aspects of client projects in compliance with Milliman’s Quality Risk Management system, as appropriate (i.e., coordinate peer reviewers, check email communications, drafts, and deliverables)
  • Project closing
    • Draft and compile project retrospective reports gathering feedback from clients and stakeholders
    • Finalize and close out all project activities and deliverables
  • Business development
    • Contribute ideas to the MicroInsurance Centre at Milliman’s business development and marketing strategy and plans
    • Support and/or coordinate the development of new project proposals
  • Internal tasks
    • Prepare internal reports on client projects for various Milliman oversight committees
    • Provide technical inputs to the firm’s external communications activities (i.e., blog posts, articles)
    • Assist in developing and implementing effective technical tools or templates for staff, consultants, and projects
    • Participate in continuous learning activities related to the field of microinsurance
    • Participation in the MicroInsurance Centre at Milliman’s thought leadership and knowledge management team sessions
  • Telecommuting permitted less than 50% of the time from the Appleton, WI area
  • Position requires international travel up to 10% of the time

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Economics, Global Development Studies, or a closely related field
  • Five years of professional experience working in development economics
  • Three years of experience developing and implementing microinsurance solutions
  • Experience with microinsurance product development-related solutions for economic, cultural, and financial systems of the African region
  • Professional experience in working in at least one of these countries: Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, or Kenya
  • Willingness to travel internationally up to 10% of the time

Location

Candidates hired into this role will be required to work in-person in the Milliman office in Appleton, WI on a weekly basis; remote work is permitted less than 50% of the time from the Appleton, WI area.

Compensation

A combination of factors will be considered, including, but not limited to, education, relevant work experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, etc.
