Mid-Level Product Designer

SpaBreaks.com

  • Reports to: Principal Product Designer
  • Salary: 350,000R - 400,000R
  • Location: Cape Town

Company

Our team has an agile mentality, and the users of our software are heavily involved in all aspects of the work on our systems. We have an exciting roadmap of customer-facing systems, and we believe in investing in the long-term health of our projects.

The team consists of developers, designers, and product experts, all working to support the needs of the business and customers while actively modernising the website's design and technical foundations.

As a member of the Spa Breaks design team, you'll work on features and improvements across a range of customer-facing websites — collaborating closely with developers and product to take ideas from concept through to a polished, working experience, across multiple systems and platforms.

We have a flexible working policy, the Spa Breaks tech team members are based in the UK, Poland, Canada, Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan.

Purpose

We're looking for a talented Mid-Level Product Designer to join the team shaping the design of features across Spa Breaks, working closely with our Principal Product Designer to explore, evaluate, and deliver the right design solutions for our users.

Spa Breaks has experienced significant growth on its online platform, and we're looking for someone who wants to be part of that continued growth — translating complex product challenges into clear, usable design solutions, and often taking ownership of projects or decisions when no clear leader is assigned, keeping things moving forward.

This is a supporting role to our Lead/Principal Designer — but we're looking for someone who can act with real independence and proactiveness. Beyond supporting the business and the lead designer, you'll be expected to suggest improvements on your own initiative, stay self-sufficient, and not wait around for work to come to you.

In practice, this means we can hand you a feature or an idea at a high level, and you'll feel comfortable taking it from there:

  • Asking the right questions to clarify scope and requirements
  • Breaking the work down into stories or tasks, and estimating it
  • Carrying the work forward confidently, using your own judgement to keep things moving
  • Picking up our processes and ways of working naturally as you go

We're looking for someone who enjoys that kind of ownership and can genuinely move things forward on their own initiative.

Main Responsibilities and Duties

Design Systems & Workflow

  • Own and evolve parts of the company's design system, including decisions around new components, standards, and best practices (including keeping it aligned with our evolving brand identity).
  • Keep design tools and files organised, scalable, and easy to collaborate in — supporting designers and engineers alike.
  • Continuously improve how design work is structured, delivered, and handed off, ensuring design quality and team efficiency.

Design & UX

  • Bring strong UX/UI skills and good design judgement ("good taste"), grounded in best practice.
  • Approach problems with an inquisitive mind — question assumptions, explore multiple solutions rather than settling for the first one.
  • Design with a mobile-first mentality, given the majority of our bookings traffic.
  • Bring conversion-focused UX awareness to booking and e-commerce flows — understanding how design decisions affect user behaviour and business outcomes.
  • Factor accessibility (a11y) into design decisions as standard practice.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Communicate confidently with stakeholders — comfortable holding a conversation, challenging ideas constructively, taking feedback, and iterating quickly.
  • Provide suggestions and input across design and UX discussions, and participate in design reviews, comfortable giving and receiving direction.
  • Work independently and effectively across a remote team spanning multiple time zones.

Tools & Process

  • Work comfortably within Jira and Agile development processes, including creating and estimating stories.
  • Use Figma and FigJam as core working tools — this is mandatory, along with a strong grasp of Figma best practices and the organisational skills to keep files and systems tidy and under control.
  • Use AI tools as part of your design process — for suggestions, quick visuals, research, brainstorming, documentation, or structuring work.

Skills & Experience

  • Around 3-4 years of design experience
  • Strong UX/UI skills and a good grasp of design best practice
  • Mandatory experience with Figma and FigJam
  • Comfort working with Jira and Agile processes
  • Excellent English communication skills, written and verbal
  • A portfolio link is welcome but optional

Desirable

  • Experience working in an online environment on an e-commerce platform
  • Experience with user research and a data-driven approach — virtual sessions, surveys, etc. — to support the lead designer

Join us and be part of a team that values your growth, well-being, and success!
