This role requires someone who can confidently manage day-to-day bookkeeping operations, maintain accurate financial records, prepare Business Activity Statements (BAS), and ensure compliance with relevant Australian regulatory requirements, with minimal training or supervision.
Key Responsibilities
1. Full-Cycle Bookkeeping & Financial Management
- - Manage day-to-day bookkeeping and accounting activities for Australian business operations.
- - Maintain accurate financial records, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and general ledger entries.
- - Perform regular bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- - Monitor financial transactions and ensure accurate classification and recording.
2. Xero Accounting & Reporting
- -Independently manage and maintain the company's accounting records using Xero.
- - Generate financial reports, including Profit & Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, and cash flow reports.
- - Ensure accurate financial data entry, account reconciliations, and month-end reporting.
- - Identify and resolve discrepancies in financial records.
3. Australian Taxation & Regulatory Compliance
- - Prepare and assist with the lodgement of Business Activity Statements (BAS).
- - Maintain a strong working knowledge of Australian GST requirements and reporting obligations.
- - Understand Australian payroll processes, PAYG withholding, and superannuation requirements.
- - Ensure bookkeeping practices align with applicable Australian taxation and regulatory requirements, particularly NSW-specific business obligations.
- - Maintain accurate supporting documentation for compliance and audit purposes.
4. Project Accounting & Financial Administration
- - Handle project-related accounting and cost tracking.
- - Monitor project expenses, allocations, and financial performance.
- - Support budgeting, expense monitoring, and financial reporting requirements.
- - Maintain organised financial documentation and records.
5. Independent Management & Ownership
- - Take full ownership of the bookkeeping function.
- - Proactively identify accounting discrepancies, compliance concerns, and process improvement opportunities.
- - Work independently and meet reporting deadlines without requiring significant training or close supervision.
- - Coordinate with management and external accountants or tax professionals when necessary.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Extensive hands-on experience in Australian bookkeeping, preferably supporting Australian-based businesses.
- Strong working knowledge and practical proficiency in Xero.
- Proven experience preparing BAS and handling BAS lodgement processes.
- Solid understanding of Australian GST, payroll, PAYG withholding, and superannuation.
- Familiarity with Australian taxation and business reporting obligations.
- Experience in project accounting and cost tracking.
- Good understanding of NSW-specific bookkeeping and compliance requirements.
- Excellent analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and take full accountability for financial records and bookkeeping deliverables.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience working directly with Australian business owners, accountants, or finance teams.
- Exposure to multiple Australian business entities or industries.
- Experience coordinating with Australian tax agents or registered BAS agents.
- Familiarity with Australian accounting standards and relevant regulatory frameworks.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who:
1. Is a seasoned Australian Bookkeeper, not an entry-level accounting professional.
2. Can confidently navigate Xero and independently manage bookkeeping operations.
3. Understands the practical application of Australian accounting and compliance requirements.
4. Can prepare accurate financial reports and BAS documentation.
5. Requires minimal onboarding and can quickly take ownership of the function.
6. Demonstrates initiative, accuracy, confidentiality, and strong professional accountability.
Application Requirements
Interested candidates should submit:
- Updated CV highlighting Australian bookkeeping experience.
- Details of Australian businesses or industries previously supported.
- Specific experience with Xero, BAS preparation/lodgement, GST, payroll, and project accounting.
- Expected hourly rate.
- Earliest availability to commence.
Important: Candidates must demonstrate actual hands-on experience supporting Australian bookkeeping operations. General bookkeeping experience without Australian accounting and compliance exposure will not meet the requirements of this position.
